Have you guys tried any energy therapies?

Such as reflexology, acupuncture, reiki or aromatherapy…
I’ve given up on these therapies as I find that they dont work for me and people around me.
What have your results been? I know reflexology is huge in Great Britain though. But I bet you when a reflexologist gets sick he doesnt go to a reflexologist he goes to a damn GP!
I think the idea of chi just very well may be quackery!

Reflexology doesn´t have to be taught ot used as an “energy” technique. It can also be done psuedoscientificlly with dermatomes and nerveous reflex arcs.
And incidentally, I´m an osteopath (yes it can be used to treat disease, not just bad backs) and haven´t been to a G.P. in about 15 years.
The main problem with those types of therapys (acupuncture, reiki, aromatherapy, shiatsu) is that they differ from therapist to therapist. There is no set way to treat. And there are so many different schools of thought. I´ve seen chiropracters (in english not sure how it´s spelt) treat kidney infections. It just depends on the person really.

I think it depends on what your wanting out of such therapies. Some people need that extra focus to help them take some downtime and that can have all sorts of positive benefits on the system.

When I was in China, I had a full Chinese medical massage thing which was absolutely fantastic. Left me feeling like I had a whole new body and so completely relaxed and refreshed. I think one of those on a regular basis would certainly improve my wellbeing.

Hi Mekhet check out skepdic.com for another person’s thoughts on osteopathy. Just hope your patients are getting benefits out of your therapy because it actually works rather than them believing that it works whe it doesnt.

ok then have had them all:rolleyes:…my mother’s really into all of that kind of stuff so until a couple of years ago i was routinely shipped off to some sort of healer or other when i had any ailments! to add to that list i’ve been to a homeopath, kinesiologist, shamamistic healer and i’ve had the bowen technique…

reflexology - i have a real foot thing can’t let people near my feet usually but i suffered through it and felt really good after..it was around the time of my leaving cert so was little bit stressed…but that sorted it out…

Acupuncture - my favourite…have had it for a few things..hurt my thumb when i was flung off a horse, and its amazing what 2 well placed pins can do..and its been perfect since! also had it to help me sleep…did work for a while but not long term…

Reiki…not too sure about this, my mum does it, not so much any more though…i think its main benefit is getting you to relax when you’re sitting or lying for so long..although she used to sneakily do it when i was sick and i’d feel it

aromatherpay’s alright…go for an aromatherapy massage and you leave smelling like dinner from all those herby essential oils…

shamanistic healing involved a lot of whistling, clicking and whooping…very strange..not gonna go anymore into it, unless anyone is very interested…

homeopathy…well i don’t go to the GP anymore unless i have tonsilitis because that’s the only thing i haven’t been cured of with homoepathy…

kineseology…its all about muscles..your body is tested to see where it is weak then your body chooses a remedy for it…a lot of this involves pinching muscles which hurts like hell…esp since my main problem is a clicky jaw and getting my face pinched isn’t too pleasant..

osteopathy…love going to the osteopath, in fact its so relaxing i’ve fallen asleep on a couple of occasions…fixed my back but my clicky jaw refuses to be fixed completely..had a few sessions with osteopath and it was almost perfect for a couple of months then gradually went back to normal…i guess i just have to keep going..

incidentally the clicky jaw is the reason i’ve been to half of these guys and its still clicky and locks sometimes…so while i think a lot of these tretments are great but they are good for certain things..

those who don’t already think i’m a freak will now, but i swear my mum made me do it!!!!!!!!!

“Nevertheless, there has not been scientific validation of Still’s theory of shaking and manipulating to remove obstructions.”

Check out some of Ivan Korr´s work. There is scientific evidence. (Actually there is a HELL of alot of evidence, not just done by osteopaths. There is also scientific evidence that proves that ALL antibiotics damage the liver and kidneys. And that aspirin wreaks the digestive system, and that vitimim supplements calcify the cardic arteries.)
And A.T. Still was an Engineer and a M.D. before an Osteopathy, scientitic subejects.
J.M.Littlejohn (next in line in osteopathic “godworship”:P) had 3 (or 4 depending on sources)degrees. Ostheopathy IS scientific, otherwise why on earth would we study biology, anatomy, pharmacology, embriology, fisics, neurology, etc? All sciences.
Also osteopathy is not just “shaking of the spine”, it can also (and should) involve vicseral manipulation. If you treat your patient mechnically, you aint going to do there liver any good.
The bad news about “alternative” medicine, is that there are so many quacks out there. I did a five year course for osteopathy, with a B.s.c (Hons) equiviant in the end. However, there´s no reason why someone can´t do a few weekends a week and qualify for a D.O. and call themselfs and Osteopath. Basiclly the same goes for Chiropracters (with incidently comes from osteopathy, Palmer was an osteopath first…), and most other schools of medicine. Would you feel safe going to an G.P. who had got his degree by doing a two week course? Thats the problem. Quacks.
What else goes quack? Ducks. And ducks get shot at with shotguns. Hum…that gives me an idea.

That’s right Mekhet we could be terrorists against doctors that quack and pretend to be profs.
Mekhet chiros seem to think that health stems from the spine and that by changing any imblances in iut’s structure affects organs that are connected to that area of the spines nerves. All the nerves come from the spine so it mkes sense really. Or does it? I dont know I wanted to be a chiropractor but I need bloody good marks in Maths before they will even let me study it. Oh dear!

I´d have no problem in scaning in my old notes and emailing them on if your really interested. Most of them are on osteopath, but there´s some other stuff in there as well. If I can find them…
And the maths thing would be for physics… (force vectors and stuff like that).
