Biggest rip off?

#

Started by Alan

For me, simply has to be “Self Esteem” by Offspring (released in 1994) that is almost identical to Nirvana’s “Smells like teen spirit” (1991).

Also, didn’t Offspring rip-off the Beatles with their “Why don’t you get a job” single a few years ago?

Shameless!

Teen spirit is similar to More than a feeling, true.

Live with it? I wasn’t upset, believe me ;)

I was just pointing out that Nirvana came out, went huge, then just a couple of years later Offspring went massive with a very similar song. It just smelled of a deliberate conscious move, imo.

no i don’t think so either! odd…

Nirvana did “borrow” the odd riff, though, it wasn’t exactly a secret. Come as you are was lifted wholesale from a Killing Joke song. Rape me is kurt ripping HIMSELF off!

its difficult as a song writer to write something completely brand new, everythings been done before. That why, in my opinion, the 60’s will always remain the greatest decade for popular music. These guys were the originators.

Well, I can’t see what was so blatantly similar about it, sure they are comparable, but hey, it was the 90s. A lot of songs have that sound. And even if it was deliberate, in my opinion The Offspring have proven themselves worthy, they have loads of good songs. So it doesn’t really matter. =)

And yeah, I don’t really get the U-Mass thing either, but I’ve heard people say it.

Kurt wrote that it was merely intentional and that he only noticed afterwards that it was very similar to ‘Eighties’. Both are excellent, I think, though.

Now Led Zeppelin, they are notorious for ripping everyone off.

initially, yeah. But then all those early british r&b groups aped the blues records that started to appear on these shores in the 60s. Some died, some grew with each release. Led Zeppelin being one of them.

“pfft”?? :D

its not really “low”, mate. Its more just reinterpreting blues music for the masses. I’m sure willie dixon (i THINK it was willie dixon) wasn’t too bothered when the royalty cheques started to roll in…

Ah, sorry, Belgian. I meant ‘Tsssk’. :p

Well, stealing lyrics is low in my eyes. But sure, royalties are indeed good. They could steal my lyrics too for cash. Anyways, I’m not even that into Led Zeppelin, the odd song is good, but I don’t really dig Plant’s vocals on quite a big part of the songs.

I think it was for the Lemon Song on Zep III, which is just a cover of Howlin’ Wolf’s Killing floor, but on Zep III there was no reference or credit given to Wolf (it may have been written by Willie Dixon..but he didn’t get credit either)

If you can find it, listen to Free Drug Zone by Seaweed.

It’s not a complete rip-off but the main riff is VERY similar to Nausea.. but what really creeps me out was how it intros, and has a bit of a bass solo in the middle.
The chorus is completely different though. Can’t say it’s a blatant rip-off, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they’d been listening Nurse when they were writing the song.
