I’d say ‘New’ Labour specifically are to blame for the rise of the far right. The very party who should be defending working class interests have instead become a dangerous joke. Blair in particular has increased racial tensions by invading Iraq and supporting Bush’s ‘crusade’, which has made the BNP’s scapegoating seem credible in some (not very bright) people’s eyes.

One of the problems is that its not just ignorant ‘working class’ people who vote for the BNP, their core support comes from the small-minded middle-class, traditional Tory supporters who think they’ve gone ‘soft’.
Though they don’t openly support the BNP, the Daily Mail and Sun do most of its ground work by articulating repulsive right-wing prejudices. Unfortunately the left has no such access to the mass-media.
Nobody should pander to the BNP supporters, its up to the left to exclude them as much as possible and to do the best to publicise our own principles.

When they are getting thousands instead of a handfull of votes - I think its hard to say only ignorant, racist knobheads are voting for them.
It’s time the other parties sat down and looked at why people are so pissed off with them and did something about it rather than sitting on the fence on issues and name calling the other parties.
“Don’t vote for them, cause things will be worse” is not a fucking policy.

Where do I begin my say on the BNP? Most of the things I wanted to say have been said. I’ve had their pieces of trash go through my letter box, about how aslyum seekers were more important than an old lady who needed new glasses - like the BNP really give a shit about old ladies.
You just have to go back and trace the roots of the BNP to know why hardly anyone here on WoM would vote for them. They started out from the ashes of the National Front (NF)and found its core support through Combat 18 (a Nazi organization fueled by violence via football hooliganism and terrorizm, though I think there is more to this lot).
Its only a few years ago that the BNP wanted to shed their skinhead and boots image to gain political support and compeat with mainstream politics.
Right, I’m going to end this message by saying that I’m proud to be gay, love food from other cultures, get on with other races and welcome what multi-cultures offer.
Right, lets have a drink of water.

They’re as viscious as ever. My flatmate was out with a group delivering anti-BNP leaflets last week and Nick Griffin drove past - 10 minutes later a bunch of nasty looking blokes showed up and started intimidating them, children included.

No, but it is pure unadulterated common sense direct from the Department of the Bleedin’ Obvious.
I agree that other parties have nothing to offer, but the BNP is dangerous …
If you were thirsty and there wasn’t much choice in the shop you wouldn’t say “all those drinks are lacking in something so I think I’ll drink piss”, would you?

No - I didn’t explain that one very well - that comment was aimed at a Labour party political broadcast I saw last week.
It spent 4 minutes going on about how David Cameron had changed his mind on certain policies (i.e. war on/in Iraq), and how he would tell voters anything to get their votes. Not once in the entire broadcast did Labour say what they intended to do, not one policy, not one idea… the entire message seemed to be “Dont vote for them, they are worse”.
I didnt have the time to go into detail earlier as I am still at work :(

One of the major problems is that the so-called ‘common sense’ attitude to most issues is so far to the right and dominated by ignorance and prejudice.
The difficult thing is knowing how to promote a more rational and liberal outlook to matters. Maybe some of us need a kick up the arse and to start being more active in such things *referring to self as well as others*

Aye, it’s the same in Northern Ireland. They try to claim old mythologies as their own to give their current grieviances some kind of legitimacy.
You never know, perhaps there’ll be murals of King Arthur, Merlin et al gracing gable walls in Bradford before too long

:) The Vikings are idolised which is quite weird seeing as they were foreign invaders…the BNP must have realised that if they were to only idolise those with true 100% ‘British’ heritage, they’d probably be left with a few troglodytes living in a cave somewhere in Northumberland to worship :)

Actually they do have a very good mural in Bradford commerorating the 100th anniversary of the Independent Labour Party. It says ‘Socialism- The Hope of the World’.
Ah, those were the days…
