Heard a really beautiful song called ‘Willie McBride’ tonight about world war 1 , and it made me think - was the guys thinking of this song when they wrote Private nobody.

Maybe - but the stories behind the songs section says:

The Green Fields of France, is it? I have heard a version of this song recorded by the Dropkick Murphys — very good.

billy pilgrim, who ‘has a sad face’ in the song, is the main character in the book ‘slaughterhouse five’ by kurt vonnegut jr. it takes vonnegut’s experiences of war and being in pow camp in dresden ww2 and time-switches to a middle age optomotrist and jumps all over the place to a planet called tralfamadore where billy is put in a zoo and mated with a film star called montana wildhack. it’s funny, sad, pretty adsurd and highly recommended. vonnegut is still alive and about 95 and pretty crazy in the best possible way.
