Devin Townsend

From what Ive seen and heard of Devin’s work he is such a unique and creative character! I’m interested in his stuff. But I must admit I’m into just screaming and craziness like that. What album should I get. I need an album that has songs like Life on it. That song is great!

I recon Ocean Machine (the one with Life) is his best work. Accelerated Evolution and Infinity are also top notch, Then go for Terria and Physicist and Synchestra… If you didn’t mind the screaming so much then check out the Strapping Young Lad albums

Kerrang have a Devin Townsend special this week… much to my amusement they describe the song ‘Detox’ as sounding like “Pantera having a fist fight with Ministry… on the moon!”

Fucking new SYL album next week! The New Black - get it boys and girls!

Physicist? its alright, not my fav but its still impressive. Its like a more comercial / accessible SYL. As solo projects go, i’d recomend:

1. Ocean Machine
2. Terria
3. Infinity
4. Accelerated Evolution or Synchestra
5. Physicist

but to be honest - you could safely get any or all of the above without fear of getting a duffer!

Actually I stuck Pysicist on for a listen and I’d forgotten how great it is.

Its like a slightly lower tempo version of SYL with loads of keyboards thrown in.

Physicist is probably my least favourite DT project.
It’s good! But just comes accross as very erratic.
Kinda like the first SYL album, but that was meant to be a bit of a headfuck.

Has anyone heard his PUNKY BRUSTER album.
A complete piss-take on the punk scene of the last few years and the music industry in general.
Each song is a different stage in the bands career and there are spoken comedy parts between songs to beef up the whole story line.

Starts out as a Death Metal band(Cryptic Coroner!) from poland who give in to the music industry and eventually become a world dominating punk band.

It’s funny as fuck! If there’s one thing Devin has in spades, it’s a sense of humour.

I just found this on the METALIRELAND.COM website.

Looks like “The New Black” will be SYL’s last album.

I really hope he’s just taking the piss again.

Quote (author unknown):

“Niko Kaartinen of Finland’s Imperiumi webzine recently conducted an interview with STRAPPING YOUNG LAD mastermind Devin Townsend. A few excerpts from the chat follow (translated from Finnish by Mike Portnoy forum member “tommidt”)”:

Imperiumi: “The New Black” is STRAPPING YOUNG LAD’s fifth and final record for Century Media. Is this the last record of SYL’s career?

Devin: “I hope so. I believe so. I signed a five-album deal with Century Media and this is now the fifth. There you have five records; they are very happy with that and I’ve done my job. Next! (laughs)”

Imperiumi: What did the Century Media people think when you told them that you were going to take rest of the year off be with your family? Wouldn’t this be the best time to promote SYL [seeing as you have a new record coming out]?

Devin: “Well, this might get me in trouble, but I couldn’t care less. Should I be on tour while I have a newborn baby at home? My wife is pregnant, so should I be far from home drinking booze and pretending that I care about heavy metal? In how many different ways I can say that I don’t care? In how many ways I can say that I’m through with this thing? I said I’d make five records, [and] I did them. We are now doing a European tour, playing some big shows. Fine. We’ll do Ozzfest; those are big shows too. We don’t need anything else, in my opinion… You can keep ‘The New Black’, I don’t care anymore. Keep the rights to the band, do what you want. I don’t care anymore, and I think it is just stupid. The manager, the band and record company look at me now just like I am the enemy, because I feel this way. But what can you do? You can’t just keep going like this anymore. I have done this for a several years now.”

Imperiumi: But still, it is about your life. You want to be able to control it.

Devin: “Exactly, if you are not able to control it, you are wasted. You’ll end up being a junkie or an alcoholic who ends up cheating your wife. Or you’ll end up a fake rock star, thinking you actually are one.”

Imperiumi: Is the the gap between SYL and your solo material becoming closer?

Devin: “It feels like I’m less and less angry all the time. Even THE DEVIN TOWNSEND BAND will put out softer stuff in the future, so the SYL material feels even harder now compared to my solo material. My next recordings will probably be something like this (points out the beautiful nature of Finland’s Provinssirock festival), something [representing] beautiful scenery. Beautiful things. I don’t have to be hard/tough (heavy) anymore. I’m 34 years old, I’m already old.”

Imperiumi: How do you want SYL to be remembered?

Devin: “As a big middle finger! How else?”

Imperiumi: Does Gene (Hoglan, SYL drummer) know yet that this is the last record?

Devin: “Umm… I don’t know. I don’t think anyone knows that. I just HOPE this is the last one, because I don’t have anything to say with this band anymore. Who knows what the future will bring? Now I just hope that I can do other things.”

Punky Bruster is funny -

“I broke a string… i mean {growls} I BROKE A STRRRRING!”

He said after City he had nothing to say with Strapping any more, then September 11th happened and he said he felt inspired again, resulting in SYL.

I think he pretty much does what the fuck he likes… as long as there are Devin Townsend records, I dont care what name he uses, be it DTB, SYL… Punky Bruster ;)

So has anyone else got THE NEW BLACK yet…?

Got it during the week myself. Typical SYL sound but a bit more user friendly, if you know what I mean.

Still heavy as fuck, but a little more polished sounding.

Gets 2 thumbs up from me.

Yup - I think for an SYL record its slightly under-par but it still pisses on most other bands stuff.

Has some great tracks on it but I know what you mean about sounding more ‘polished’

It actually sounds more like a DTB record than a Strapping record.

Infinity is really cool but a little harder to get into - there are a couple of tracks on it that are just bonkers…

Physicist is a bit more like SYL (although not as heavy)

For a next purchase you might want to go for Terria - although which ever you get - you aren’t gonna end up with a stinker.

Give the other tracks on Ocean Machine time, which tracks in particular didn’t you like? the slower ones?

Oh - if you can get the digipack of the last album (Synchestra) there is a bonus DVD with the band playing live in the studio, they do quite a few tracks (1 or 2 off Ocean Machine) and it is amazing.

Well I recomend it… Strapping Young Lad Is more extreme and Heavy as a heavy thing, city and Alien personaly are like a wall of sound punch to the face…the new black is a bit more easy going in a good way. The Devin townsend solo stuff… i have found more enjoyable from a muso point of view…it’s epic, pompus and also heavy as well… the latest album i have found addictive and something i have a lot of time for..so if it sounds our sort of thing check out please.
