Big Country

#

Started by Dennis

Don’t laugh, but I just heard Big Country - Fields of Fire*
and it reminded me that, far from being my favourite band (I never ever listen to them, though I did have a soft spot for them years ago), it was hands down the best gig I ever went to.

Have YOU ever been to see a naff band and had a great time?

Do tell.

I am all ears.

Well, my wife says I have quite small ears, actually, but I do have a rather large (and, alas, broken) nose, if that’s any good to you…?

(*I am making a Scottish compilation for a customer up in Inverness)

Yees, Big Country was a really good band! Dunno where I have lost the couple of first LP:s of them; the 1st (Is it named “In a big country”?) and Steeltown.

i have memories of seeing kula shaker years ago and thinking it was the best gig ever. *shame*

actually, i retract that statement, at the time it was great. i must’ve been about 15 or something. i was sober, i remember that.

it gets worse though. i saw them… twice.

“In a Big Country” is a classic! Face to Face did a great cover.

Didn’t the lead singer kill himself?

I sat through Travis(ty) at Glastonbury 2000 and I thought it was quite good. The atmosphere mixed with their jangley, middle of the road chart bothering indie anthems and a setting summers sun, half a bag of strong skunk and an afternoon on the beer just topped my day off nicely.

I saw Moby the same weekend and that was really good too. Then Nine Inch Nails came on and tore him a new arsehole - which was nice :)

Saw Moby 95 at Provinssirock and really enjoyed it! Saw Faith no more, Danzig, Bad Religon and Suede same day and thought Moby would be crap but he topped the icing on the cake!

How are they a naff band?

For me it’s still Daphne and Celeste followed by Blink 182 at Reading ‘01 - good times :)

Half of my music collection and past gigs would be considered naff :)

I saw Rilo Kiley last year, who are a country-twee-indie band whose members were child stars in cheesy American shows and films and they were great. An ex dragged me to King Adora who were good in a drunken-glam way.

I saw NERD, Pink and Scissor Sisters at a festival who were good fun for all of 5 minutes until the novelty wore off.

Naff knows no bounds with the likes of Squeeze, Meat Loaf, Jethro Tull, Lindisfarne and I nearly saw Electric6 if I wasn’t snarfing their beer at the time.

I saw Electric 6 at Leeds festival a few years ago… their entire set was drowned out by chants of “Gay Bar” and as soon as they played it everyone fucked off to watch something else.

anything else…

I think I even saw two people sat outside the tent watching grass grow.

I think he hanged himself, in fact, but I could be wrong.
