Iron Maiden : A Matter Of Life And Death

#

Started by buffalo-boy

Is it just me or is this just another Iron Maiden album. I can’t take hearing yet another album that sounds the same with a bass that goes dum diddy dum diddy dum diddy dum diddy. All songs in the same key with virtually the same chord sequences and words about war.
Yet the mags are heaping praise on it? OK, so it might be a good album BUT it sounds like all their others! A good day for metal, a bad day for creativity in rock music. Snore… I’m off to listen to OCFA!

I have to admit that I do like the new IM album.
Been listening to it for the last few days.

But as said previously. IM albums are pretty much all the same. Well! the last few any way.

10 songs. 72+ minutes.
I think they waste a lot of time on most of the songs
If they just cut out a lot of the fiddly, plucky, mellow intros, outros, etc. that they have on most of the tracks from the more recent albums, and wrote more standard length songs, they would have a much bigger impact when listening to them.

I mean! There isn’t one stand out classic IM track on any of the last few albums. I like them as whole albums better than the individual tracks. Mainly because the better tracks are all about 10 minutes long, but they also have annoying wasteful sections in them too.
It’s like they keep trying to recreate FEAR OF THE DARK or HALLOWED BE THY NAME.

But even after saying all that. I still can’t wait to hear some of the new songs live. That’s where IM songs really make their mark. FOTD and HBTN are perfect examples of this.
Also PASCENDALE. Absolutely fantastic live when I last saw them.

There’s great pieces of music on the new Maiden album, but there’s too many long songs on the album and nothing really sticks out. Brave New World and Dance of Death had variety whilst this one doesn’t.

These Colours Don’t Run, however, is a top track.

SNAP! That song is really after growing on me the more I listen to the album.

Also ‘Brighter Than A 1000 Suns’, ‘…Benjamin Breeg’ and ‘For The Greater Good Of God’.

Even though from comments I’ve read from others, most people don’t really think too much of FTGGOG,

Just ordered it, I’m really just expecting another Maiden album, that in itself isn’t a bad thing though! Gonna see them again in Dec and it’s always better to know the songs - (p.s. I’d buy it eventually anyway if they weren’t playing)

LOL, exactly! “Benjamin Bregg” is the best example. The intro isn’t very interesting the first time around, but then when you think (hope) Dickinson starts singing it’s another round of dum diddy dum diddy dum and that dreamy, boring guitar in the backround.

I don’t blame them for making the same album over and over again. The chance for inventions has long since passed Maiden by and all their fans want to hear is a rehash of the glory days. I could never listen to a whole Maiden album anyway. I always picked out two or three songs from each release and it’s the same thing with the new album. It’s just harder this time as there are so many useless epics.

I’m amazed those guys haven’t worn down just the 3rd 5th and 7th frets on their guitars - its the only ones the ever use!

Bought this for a friend’s birthday so I had a sneaky peak at the DVD last night - hang on, this is the same content that has been available on the official site for weeks! What a rip-off, at least they could have had something exclusive for those who have paid the extra for the 2 disc version! Fortunately the documentary is, whilst fairly brief at 30 mins, quite interesting and has a good mix of funny moments and genuine insight into the creative process.

That is pretty shocking, but at least you bought it as a present for someone so they have something nice, not just a CD to keep forever. :)

I think we should start a petition and get Maiden to use some lower guitar tunings on their next album so they sound a bit more up to date!

Actually Adrian Smith does tuned his bottom E string down to D on a few tracks when they play them live, but that is less to do with trying to sound current and everything to do with trying to be heard over two other guitarists!

I think all bands should experiment and there are a lot of bands that lapse into self-parody in later years, but then again a band like the Stones DOES try new things, and gets slated for it, so it’s kind of hard for older bands to win!

But yeah, the galloping thing really HAS got to stop.:D

Yeah bit of a predicament that. Go up to date and the fans say “trendy sell-outs!” Stay the same and people say , “How predictable!”
Its a lose/lose situation! :)

I think maybe the best compromise a band can come to in that respect is to stick to what they know, but to present it in a new way - e.g. use different guitars, different sounds, try a new brand of amp, set up your drum kit differently etc etc.

One of the problems with Maiden is that, whilst the songs may be better or worse, they always have the same SOUND.

A fresh sound is a good way to breath new life into an old style.

It’s a valid point. When I heard that Bruce and Adrian were rejoining, I was praying that they’d bring on board the kind of sound they got on Chemical Wedding. Maiden songs with the Chemical Wedding sound? That would be fantastic!

Fucking bastard HMV

I sent them an email saying we haven’t received our Maiden CD we ordered for a mate’s birthday, so they say ” ah these things DO get lost in the post sometimes, don’t worry, we will refund you or send you a replacement”

“Good”, says I “cos I want a refund, don’t need a replacement, I have bought it elsewhere now”.

“Oops”, says HMV “you see, we…erm…have already posted a replacement, you’ll have to return it to us for a refund”

Ah well, at least I will be able to give you my full review on here of it, cos I am damn straight gonna copy the fucker!

but the new album is really not outstanding, for me it’s like terminator 3 , where it seems to be what it is supposed to, but makes no sense …

last 2/3 tracks are alright, probably ;)

Different Worlds is a strong opener, and is an obvious single, but from then on in, the album suffers from them trying to shoehorn completely different pieces of music together in the same song with seemingly no musical or thematic benefit.

And whatever they do, it still just sounds like your typical Iron Maiden album…those guitarists really need to push themselves to try things they haven’t done before.

When I first heard of the single The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg I really thought that this is it, Maidens are history now. But after then when I heard the whole album for the first time I thought “okay, they made another shitty No Prayer For The Dying” kinda crap. Few times more of listening to the new album and I started liking the album. It has good songs, not that any of these aren’t so special Maidens songs but why to change anything if they’re still the best in for what they’re doing? Can someone name any other band that makes things better than Maidens? Bruce still has the most powerful metal singer’s voice ever and Irons still rocks.

These Colours Don’t Run and Brighter Than A Thousand Suns are my favourite tracks from the new album. The rest of the album is just good. I know someone might say that These Colours Don’t Run ain’t that great. But there’s something magical in that song and I can’t tell it. Maybe the chorus? Maybe Bruce’s voice? Maybe the whole song?

Brighter Than A Thousand Suns is one of my favourites too. I like the quieter bits where Bruce sings in a very natural, soft voice before he builds back into his trademark air raid siren.

Whether or not you like the album I guess depends on personal taste as much as anything, but in terms of performance, the whole band seem to be giving 100% on AMOLAD
