Horror fiction

Can anyone suggest any good recent horror fiction?

I’m plodding through The Historian (Dracula-themed horror/mystery) which got great reviews in the press…but is incredibly DULL.

I don’t read horror. Unless you count ‘The Stand’ as horror - I thought that was an amazing book :)

Try a Barbara Cartland, that will definitely freak you out! :)

Just finished “Haunted” by Chuck Palahniuk, was a lot better than I expected. Some of it is VERY creepy / sick.

Also, I’ve banged on about this book a lot on these boards, but if you haven’t read House Of Leaves by Mark Danielewski you definitely should - I can guarantee it’ll be like nothing you’ve ever read!

Thats a good question!

Well, first of all the book itself is massive and heavy - costs about £20 to buy I think. The pages are *slightly* bigger than the front and back covers as well (which hints towards the themes inside).

Its basically about this guy called Johnny Truant (I think a band are named after him now) who befriends this blind old man called Zampano. Johnny is a bit of dude, hes a tattoo artist in LA who sleeps around a lot / drinks / parties etc. When the old man dies, he clears out his apartment and finds these claw marks on the floor and a manuscript scattered everywhere.

The rest of the book is Johnny obsessively sorting through the manuscript and adding footnotes to it as it goes along. The manuscript is a story called The Navidson record, about a family (the Navidsons) who move into a new house. After a while a door appears in their new home that leads into a dark corridor - however, the way the corridor goes is impossible, because it leads to where outside the house should be - yet theres nothing outside. They decide to explore it.

So basically Johnny’s story and the Navidson’s criss-cross and parallel for the remainder - its very creepy / claustrophibic - i really think you’d like it

Have you read The Monk by Matthew Lewis, Sam? It’s probably contender for first ‘proper’ horror novel (as opposed to the gothic ‘romances’).

It wouldn’t appeal to everyone, but who knows?

EDIT: sorry, just reread your first post.. It’s certainly not recent. :o

It’s a classic - and makes allusions to necrophilia! I also like the fact the author became known not as plain old Matthew Lewis - but Matthew “Monk” Lewis

:D yeah, that’s great (I mean, ‘Matthew “Monk” Lewis’, not Necrophilia).
I’ll have to read it again at some point. I remember being pretty shocked by some of it when I first read it, mostly because I was expecting your typical Gothic Romance-style of ‘horror’ (which are great, but often about as scary as the Munsters. :) )

Yeah, I read Ann Radcliffe and Horace Walpole and they’re pretty dull…Maturin’s Melmoth the Wanderer was alright, though.

You’ve sidetracked me…I didn’t intend to discuss horror fiction from 200 years ago! ;)

I put Haunted down a whole ago, and haven’t gotten around to picking it back up yet.

House of Leaves is definetly interesting. A whole bunch of story within a story within a story going on. I agree it’s an original..When I picked it up, it was from just thumbing through the book at the store and going “What the Hell is this”

The way they print the text all over the place as it goes on and the dude starts going nuts, is original..but can get annoying at times.

A little disappointed with the ending, but it’s a fun ride

Have you seen his latest book, Only Revolutions?

I was going to buy it in the store, but had a flick through it and decided against it. The typography is insane and you have to read 8 pages from the front, turn the book upside down and around, read 8 pages from the back, then turn it back round again and so on and so forth to give the impression that you’re swirling down a whirl pool then out of it again

Apparently it’s a poem told alternately between two eternally youthful American Teenagers running away from Time… I just basically think he’s getting to clever for his own good
