I saw about two minutes where he tried to persuade some men to let him cup their testicles… not really my idea of comedy I’m afraid.

Pfft…some people.

Borat is Sacha Baron Cohen’s best character, and I think he’s funny. Mainly because he’s prepared to go there and pull off his character so well to the unexpecting.

Take for example when he’s talking to the feminists and he asks about women having smaller brains than men. They have no idea he’s kidding around which makes it funny.

Oh, and the “Throw the Jew Down the Well” song was another brilliant sketch, considering he is a jew and managed to get some Americans to sing along to it.

So there.

And no, I haven’t seen the film yet. And I saw him on the Woss show and thought he was funny. So there.

Looking forward to seeing it as I always thought he was Baron Cohen’s best character as well. Looking forward to seeing a load of stupid Americans being made to look even stupider :)

Tubthumper - I guess if you have to explain to someone why you find something funny then it means it’s not their kind of humour ;)

@colin= & hoochalobster: Borat, the character, isn’t really working, IMO, in front of an audience who knows it’s just a character. When he’s interviewing people who are completely unaware that he’s a comedian it’s way funnier.

The movie’s first half isn’t so funny and I was almost feeling bored. The second half, however, WOAH! You’ll laugh. Hard. You’ll see the guy do things that are so wrong and so funny at the same time. No, it’s not for the political correct and a lot of it is stupid mindless slapstick, but then a lot of it isn’t as mindless as you might think. So give the movie a chance.

if you’re going to a kinepolis cinema, you can order your tickets online. I always do this when I want to go to a movie, because kinepolis in brussels on a friday night is always sold out, for every descent movie, so they make you go to a horrible french cabaret film…

I did go to a cinema of the Kinepolis-group, but I’m pretty much against the one in Ghent… They do everyting to ruin your evening out! They encourage people to eat noisy snacks, they sell more expensive tickets for digital films, and if you have bought such an expensive ticket, you realise you have been screwed, as they play the regular version, with lots of visual clicks and errors…
They have THX-certificated rooms, but they wipe their asses with the THX-requirements, they don’t even play the THX-trailer, NO advert to shut down your mobile phone, or to keep quiet during the film, but use the time they would waste on the THX-trailer to play their adverts to encourage the people to buy their noisy snacks instead, … resulting in, having to watch your film in noisy surroundings…
The cinema is located next to THE student area in Ghent and is surrounded by pubs… they’re giving all sorts of reductions for students, a good thing, but not it you’re located next to their drinking area!!!! Lot’s of people go to the cinema after hanging in that area, and have a few pints, when they’re in the cinema, they seem to think they’re still in the pub, and don’t bother to shut their fucking mouths!!!!

My first thought was also to buy the tickets online, but having the thoughts about that cinema like the ones you can read above, and go to their website and realise that online orders cost 0,20 € more, just because they don’t have to lift their asses and have to do NOTHING if you order online, there just is no easier way for them… I refuse to buy my tickets online (for Ghent), it’s not about the 20 cents, it’s just the thought, even it if was just 0,01€ extra costs I would refuse!

No offence to Metropolis, Antwerp (I haven’t been to the Kinepolis-cinema in Brussels yet), the location is perfect, and I haven’t noticed ANY of the above mentioned bothering elments there, I’d gladly pay a 0,20€ extra costs to be sure of a seat there, even if the extra cost was a few euro’s… I’m looking forward to the new cinema that is planned come in Ghent (Flanders Expo) weather it is Kinepolis or not, I’m sure the location is a lot better, a pity it’s not for the first few years :(

Anyone who says it isn’t funny has got a screw loose in my opinion! I’ve never laughed so much in the cinema before in my life. Not only is the slapstick element side splittingly hilarious, but the fact he is managing to get ignorant and/or anti social groups of people to ridicule themselves too ie racists etc.

Ten out of ten. Brilliant!

I’ve heard there’s various people suing the production company and Cohen about this movie. The people of Glob, Romania (which is represented as a village in Kasakhstan) thought it was a documentary about their village and were only paid 5 euro each for their parts. Also, the 3 college kids on the bus were promised that what they said would be only shown outside the US.

As for the movie itself, I thought it was ok. I’d love to know how much of it was spontaneous - I had a hard time believing the Pam Anderson part, for example. Surely she’d have a little more security than that? Plus the fact that the incident got as far as the car-park made it seem a little unlikely. Also, throughout the film, the various (multiple) camera positions would indicate that the “victims” would have been aware of what was going on.

I heard about the students, they said they have been made drunk by the people from the production. They saw the camera, and I don’t believe that alcohol can make such sexistic and rasist pricks out of a ‘normal’ person!
A normal person wouldn’t say such things, not even when it’s only broadcasted in other countries than their own.

Everything is spontaneous. If you check on IMDB the only actors listed are for the parts of Borat, Azamat and the fat prostitute. Pamela is mentioned as well, but that’s for legal purposes only I think. If you watch her initial reaction to Borat closely, you can see it’s genuine. I don’t think she’s that great an actress… ;)

It seems that for the Borat TV episodes, the whole crew of cameramen etc. pretended that Borat was a real Kazachstani reporter that hired them, a freelance crew. They pretended to be embarassed about the whole thing all the way through filming. I believe they employed the same technique for the movie.
