Bands That Change Frontmen

#

Started by buffalo-boy

Just thought of this cos i saw somewhere that Monster Magnet are carrying on without Dave Wyndorf…

For me; its the frontman that defines the band (and being a bassist, thats annoying!) and bands returning with a new singer is pretty dumb I think! Imagine Metallica without Jim fronting… OK So Faith No More got (far) better with Mike but what other decent ones are there?

Alice In Chains have done ok but INXS - WHY?!
Stone Temple Pilots with Richard Patrick fronting - WHY?!
Audioslave - WHY?!
Blaze Bayley era Maiden *shudder*

Anymore for anymore and what do you think of this?

ACDC is a good example of the fact that bands CAN achieve success without the original frontman.
I know some people far prefer Bon Scott, which I can understand, but for me both era of the band are great and both frontmen have some amazing songs in their catalogue - Back In Black is a great album, for a start! And which ACDC fan would seriously wanna do without the likes of Thunderstruck and You Shook Me All Night Long?!

On the other hand I think a band like Oasis who have changed pretty much everyone else APART from the singer (oh and Noel, of course) HAVE lost their original charm, so I guess it all depends on the band.

I do feel sorry for people like Brian May though, who are so closely associated with a certain band and then the singer dies…what can he do? To some people May will always be The Guy Out Of Queen, but what should he do? Should he just jack in doing what he does or should he continue to play?!

ooh, great topic. Its a bit hit n miss really isn’t it, depending on the band. AC/DC are massive with Brian, Van Halen were massive with Sammy, and Maiden were massive with Bruce. But then there ARE the travesties, Queen with paul rodgers, Alice in chains with whoever the fuck that is. And i hear this week that Blind Melon have regrouped with someone else. Now Monster magnet? Blimey.

Anyhoo, like i said, it depends on the band. I think in a case where the frontman was a massive part of the group then the reformed version shouldn’t be called that name anymore.

I like both versions of Pink Floyd: with Syd barret or with Dave Gilmour. Some people think Dave changed their sound too much, but I think that with Syd still onboard they would’ve “matured” their sound in the same direction anyways.

I guess it all depends on the role of the singer in a band. Someone like Freddy Mercury with a unique voice and singing style defines the bands sound pretty much on his own. With a band like Cannibal Corpse on the other hand, most people wouldn’t even know wether it was Chris Barnes or George “corpsegrinder” Fisher singing…

I think it depends on the band as well. Anthrax got better with John Bush as well, tho they’ve been touring again lately with Joey Belladonna.

It’s like with The Darkness. Can’t believe they’re gonna get that bassist to take over from Justin. He looks retarded. Eyes far too close together. Not nearly enough hair.

Oh god, yeah, wish I’d remembered them!

They certainly DID get better with John Bush

Well sadly it looks as though they are staying with joey… which is so shit.. they even seem to say they wont play anything from those albums anymore:( which is shitter as they were some of the best ones.

Even more depressing is that John Bush seems to be strapped for cash now and has become the Voice of Burger King for their adverts in the USA.

I remember at the time of the reunion, Scott Ian was saying that Bush was very much part of the band and that he had declined to take part in a two-lead-singer tour but that the band understood and that this was just something they wanted to do for their anniversary..Seems very odd to me for a band to just wash their hands of four studios albums that have such great material on and go back to being a “greatest hits” package..

Maybe they just got bored of playing smaller venues and wanted a fast buck back to arenas?

or to put it another way:

Fucking sell outs

Well it hasn’t exactly worked now has it… I saw them with Bush on a sold out tour, the reunion tour didn’t sell out and I saw them at the same venue i saw them with Bush at and it was only 3/4 full.
The last Anthrax album did really well and boosted their profile loads they should have carried on the momentum.

How about Velvet Revolver? I think they’ve got it right…took all the good bits of G n R and make good music…they’re not very ‘dangerous’ but then again, what is these days? :p

:D OK fair cop guv, you caught me out wildly exaggerating again! :D

Put it another way: worst GOOD drummer in rock!

He’s tight as a nat’s nether regions, granted, I just hate his drum sound - typical booming, soulless 80’s big RAWK sound. Yeuch. All plod and no swing.

Meg White, of course, isn’t fit to polish the man’s drumsticks :D
