What’s your favorite band from the early 60’s

I love them all so much, but The Beatles are just untouchable.

(Before changing the message boards’ software in August 2007 this discussion contained a poll, which may return in the future)

hmmmm…the early sixties when they were all polite and shit, or the mid to late sixities when they were all off their tits and started to wear ill-advised garments?

Tough one. My fave band out of those would easily be the Stones, but not for anything they recorded in the early 60’s.

The early sixties saw them participate in some bar fights during their Berlin period with Tony Sheridan… So they were not that polite, I can tell ya! :)

Even the new Love album is not bad at all… full on stoner music!

i hear what yer saying mate, but i’m thinking of the matching suits and the head bobbing and the simple beat songs, as opposed to the long hair and beard and “what happens if we play that backwards?” approach of the later period.

I f**king love The Kinks though!! :D

I was just about to say the Kinks:)

Ray Davis was a bit of nutter but wrote some amazing stuff.. and was very inspiring.

I do really Like the Beatles as well, i know everyone quotes them as the best thing ever. But they did do stuff way a head of their time and have a very strong back catalogue.

Stones I like the singles but haven’t found an album by them that i can listen to all the way through and the Beach Boys I just find a bit dull to be honest.

I…i have no comeback for that. My hygiene is appalling. :(

Divers and Mrs H are 100% correct about the Beach boys. HOW many times is Pet sounds going to be reissued? Has anybody actually really sat down and listened to that album? “wouldn’t it me nice” and “god only knows” aside its fucking BORING!!How is it considered one of the greatest albums of all time? Its not even the Beach Boys greatest album!! Beach Boys are one of those bands where a greatest hits will suffice.

The Kinks were fantastic, but again a greatest hits collection will do.

The Stones have not released anything even remotely decent since the Beatles were still a going concern.

And don’t even start me on the Who.

Early 60s definitely the Beatles with the Who second and probably the Yardbirds third.

The Who and the Stones best stuff came later in the 60s (I agree with Taunty Dan, good singles bad albums).

Has to be the Who for me. They helped set the standards of how heavy a band can be usuing melody and get away with it. Wasn’t about smashing their gear.

Wasn’t that the “John married a weird yellow pixie that makes him do bad things”-period?

I’m with Dan the earlier stuff was a bit more exciting..i bought Pet sounds because everyone went on about the production and the songs. And yes the studio stuff he was doing was way before it’s time. It’s just the songs i found really boring. I guess it just wasn’t my cup of tea.. millions of people think it’s amazing so i’m in the minority.

Make of that what you will. :)
