One of my new years resolutions was to hold back on my negative comments as its disruptive to the soul and mind and benefits nobody…

,…but that was the worst cover version i have EVER heard! Christ Illusion was the first and last number 1 album Middle America will be giving to a band like slayer, mark my words! At least when Metallica got a number 1 album they played the game right and capitalised on their good fortune!

there’s no such thing as selling out. Metallica were born to entertain lots of people and they do.

No they sold out. They went for the cash big time, just watch the making of the Black album to see how bad they wanted to be super rich and sell lots of records. “I was born for dying” Hetfield once said, think he should change that.

i dont get the ‘selling out’ argument at all…

i play in a band and would love to make money from it so i don’t have to do a job i hate. When i first started playing i imagined myself in a stadium full of young women throwing their underwear at me and coming off stage to piles of cash and cocaine…who doesnt?!! Name me one muso who started playing guitar and thought ’ Wow, i’d love to continue living with my mum and playing at the mirror for the rest of my life’!!

In the case of Metallica, when have they ever said ‘look Linkin Park are really big - lets copy them and make ourselves popular with the horrible little baggy skate cunts for a bit more money’. Never - they’ve always just done what they wanted! They wrote simple songs for the black album because they were bored of playing thrash epics for 8 minutes. What else could they have done? Made another boring And Justice For All? Their career would have been over by now.

First off Justice is fantastic and a hell of a lot better than the Black album. I’m not talking about following trends I’m talking about them writing music that would get picked up by radio and MTV. They made a choise to cut out using bad language so as not to get it banned from certain record shops. They followed up this record with Load, a nice safe album that didn’t push any boundries. They followed that with a nice safe album part 2. Then a cover and a live album, they couldn’t come up with new stuff. Then St. Anger, What was that about?

I couldn’t give a toss if Metallica brought out a bango record as long as they ment it and they weren’t playing it nice and safe thinking of their bank balances, which they do far too much. Money changes you and Metallica are evidence of that.

While I agree that a lot of people accuse bands of selling out way too quickly, there is a certain line artists can cross. Sure, everybody wants to make a living from his music and that’s fair enough, but you should always put artistic merit over commercial (or sexual) interests.
To me Metallica didn’t sell out with “Load” or “Reload”. Those albums were legitimate attempts at trying out news things (although they still sucked hard). BUT they did sell out with that stupid live album with strings (!) and the cover album and most of all with Lars “Shithead” Ulrich’s embarrassing fight against Napster. How greedy can you get?

If someone poor had led the fight everyone would say they were fighting for the common good and were a true hero. Whilst I agree lars handled the whole thing badly, i think overall he helped a good few artists too.

And i agree Justice is a great album, i was just saying i couldn’t take another one if they had repeated themselves (see Iron Maiden!!)
