Manics: Wolves 6th April Review

#

Started by Dennis

As threatened/ promised, here is my review of last night’s gig:

To put it into context, I am a long-term follower of the band, dating back to before even the first album came out, and I have seen them 9 times in total over various tours. I am one of those who thinks The Holy Bible was their high tide and that since then they have been patchy at best.
So, I wasn’t expecting much from the gig at all, having seen some very flat performances from them in recent years (especially the godawful “Greatest Hits” tour. Yeuch!)

However, they seem to have a renewed energy and sense of fun and adventure and certainly didn’t play it safe with the setlist (see below). Highlights were surprisingly ballsy versions of Archives of Pain (once they got past the pointless first verse and chorus, done with just James Bradfield and clean guitar sound), Ifwhiteamerica…, Of Walking Abortion and Roses In The Hospital. They even played the first section of Paradise City by Guns n Roses as an intro to Motown Junk (Full band, they got right through up to the point where Axl blows the whistle..and instead of coming in with the GNR riff, ripped into Motown Junk)
Even the songs from the dull Lifeblood album where well-chosen and well-played.

Couple of other points:-

1) The band who once said “No Pat Smears in THIS band!” when Richie first disappeared…HAVE A 2ND GUITARIST NOW!!!! LOL

2) James Dean Bradfield has a right belly on him now, and, combined with his screwed-up facial expressions HE LOOKS LIKE BB KING!!!!!!

I still maintain that their best years and best albums are behind them, but last night’s gig was a pleasant surprise from a band I thought were over-the-hill.

nice little review there. so “archives of pain” was acoustic then? dammit. i was sure they were playing it properly on this tour. i noticed they left out “the girl who wanted to be god” which they’d been playing on previous nights. oh well, roll on the 12th…

and thank god they’re not still finishing with “a design for life” :)

Thanks!

Archives of Pain was like this:
James Dean had his electric guitar set with no distortion, sang first verse and “chorus” (if u wanna call it that) and then the full band joined in. Sounds a bit shit when described like that, but worked well, nice bit of tension built up then a nice big release. I hate acoustic versions, full stop, and whilst I would have preferred a full-band version of the whole song, it worked well as it was, and was far from an “acoustic” version as some reports would describe it. (I cut and pasted the setlist from another website, so ignore the “acoustic” after Archives..)

I also liked the way he was hitting himself in the head in rhythm with the drums on Of Walking Abortion, daft sod.

And yes, I was glad Design For Life and You Love Us got buried into the set instead of being obvious encores.

Wait, there were no encores! Hey, the Manics of old are back!! Lol

Man, that’s my favourite track of The Holy Bible.
Seems like a good setlist.

I would much rather have No Surface..and To Repel Ghosts (best track on Lifeblood…?) than Empty Souls or 1985, but I woulda LOVED to have heard 4st 7lbs, so you have turned me green. Ya bugger!

Mind U, at least I heard them play it on the Holy Bible tour (Best tour ever by any band ever I would argue. Mind you, not many would wanna sit through Intense Humming Of Evil live…!).

And you are right about Ocean Spray, too!

got home about ten minutes ago. setlist was rather similar but we got revol, the masses against the classes and the girl who wanted to be god. i’ll post another message tomorrow regarding the gig in more depth but i’m really drunk right now and can’t be arsed to type too much. but suffice to say it was fucking great. i’ve now seen the manics nine times and this rates up amongst the best.

Oh my God, I think you must be my alter-ego…I have also seen the Manics 9 times now…And from your little signature at the bottom, seems like you are a Smiths fan too. I’m off to start a thread about the new Moz live stuff, see you over there later maybe? LOL

Yes I have heard it, although it was the first Manics album that I didn’t get at the first possible opportunity, as I expected it to be crap.

In actual fact, I think it is a very strong album, with some very well-crafted songs, interesting sounds and a consisitent feel (something that has been missing from recent MSP albums..)

HOWEVER the lyrics are just damn rubbish and it is a shame that the edge has gone from their music.

If Lifeblood was their only release, I’d find them a pretty underwhelming band. As the current tour shows, though, mixed in with the older material, Lifeblood adds another dimension to the band’s career as a whole.

I loved them as angry young men, I adore the Holy Bible ,and whilst I will never feel that way about Lifeblood, it is a good, solid work.
