Joy division

Right I’m new to joy division. I’ve heard Isolation, love will tear us apart and shes lost control. What album should I buy, a best of thing or one of the normal albums?

I have Unknown Pleasures and it is fantastic. I’m looking into getting some more too, so I’ll be interested to see what people recommend.

Go for Joy Divison - Substance 1977-1980, although Isolation isn’t on there Leaders of Men and my favourites Digital and Transmission are. Great album.

Buy the normal albums, there are only two, ‘Unknown Pleasures’ and ‘Closer’. They’re usually available pretty cheapish these days and are really good albums. Then buy that compilation ‘Substance’ to get the non-album tracks, like ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’.

i prefer “closer” as an album but for a good introduction to joy division i’d recommend the “permanent” compilation. it has stuff from “unknown pleasures” and “closer” but also a few other singles and bits and bobs.

whilst we’re talking about joy division i’d like to point out that when i saw nine inch nails last night they did a cover of dead souls and it was fantastic.

I agree with realityfuck.

Les Baines Douches is a great live album, though. BUt get the two studio albums first.

I was listening to Unknown Pleasures in work the other day for the first time in years, and fuck me, that is one of the best albums ever recorded.

I would also recommend you go out and buy the two “normal” albums right away - Unknown Pleasures and Closer. After that its up to you really, but I’d avoid the BBC sessions, don’t rate it much myself. Haven’t heard the live French album.

If you had the money you should definately buy “Heart and Soul” 4 disc boxed set. It has everything and slightly more :p

I really liked the 12” version of “She’s Lost Control”.

There’s some classic stuff on Heart and Soul, including the two albums (Closer, at times, has me to the brink of tears. Believe me)lives tracks (including a live set which was breath taking), and a couple of remixes.

However, there’s a few unissued tracks still in the vaults that we’ve yet to hear. That’s my only gripe with the otherwise faultless set.

Also, try reading Touching From A Distance by Ian’s widow Deborah. Talk about thought provoking. Whilst you’re at it, check out 24 Hour Party People.

I started with Unknown Pleasures and Closer. Later I sprang for Heart and Soul. I love some of their older punk stuff like Ice Age and Warsaw. It’s kind of cool to see their musical range as a band.

I only own Permanent with the intention to buy everything when I became a bit older and richer but I never got to doing so. The next thing I’ll buy is the quintessential album, Closer followed by Unknown Pleasures and Les Bains Douches.

I really like Joy Division i’d start with the albums in order

Unknown Pleasures
Closer
Substance
Still

The last two are compilations but still worth picking up,i don’t have any of the BBC sessions or live albums.
