Isolation or Isolation?

Which version do you prefer, Joy divisions original song or the Therapy? version?

(Before changing the message boards’ software in August 2007 this discussion contained a poll, which may return in the future)

I find Therapy?s version more appealing. The main riff is played by guitar and not with keyboards, hate the sound of them.

I didnt think the original was up to much either, as much as I love Joy Division, T?’s version was more focused.

TBH, I only listened to the Joy Division original for the first time a few days ago, and it was promptly deleted off my computer. I just found it completely boring compared to the T? version.

I like both although the Therapy? version is better. The thing is in the verses of the T? version Andy sings exactly the same as Ian curtis does. I thought he could sing in his own style more…Oh well!

I think Therapy?s version is much better. Their arrangement flows much better, the way they space some of the verses out a little, where the Joy Division version the roll one into the other.

Also Andy sings it with a more desperate tone and pace that fits the songs lyrics better than Ian’s original version (normally you couldn’t say anyone has a bleaker tone than Ian, but in this is the exception to the rule).

Plus I think the stripped down instruments (no more overbearing synth), and slower tempo, fits the songs lyrics and message much better.

The original seems to me a bit of a work in progress which they never got to finish. It has a bit of a rushed quality to it.

It’s hard to say as they are really very different. Therapy?’s is much more listener friendly, but joy divisions has more atmosphere and gets across isolation and sparseness.

I probably listen to the therapy? version more.

I love Joy Division, but I prefer T?’s version. The production really does the song justice.

I also prefer T?’s version of ‘Gimme Danger’ to the Stooges version.

I voted for the original because I rarely like covers but this was a close call. It could have something to do with me listening constantly to Joy Division for the last week or so.

It was a great cover but it didn’t blow the original away and for me to like a cover it should do so.

Examples:

Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley
How Soon Is Now? by Paradise Lost (God knows how much I like The Smiths but this is plain brilliant)
All Along The Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix
The Entire She Loves You album by The Twilight Singers (What Makes You Think You’re The One was a close one)

I hope I made my point clear

You ought to not forget that the original version is from another period, with just Joy Division’s own possibilities.
T? version is excellent, with their own personalily. Have you ever watch T? Isolation video ?

Definitely Therapy?s version. The original sounds like a dry run for what would become the New Order sound – it lacks focus and Ian’s voice is rather weak.

I can’t decide. They’re both good, but T?’s is more heavier, whilst Joy Division’s goes well with the rest of Closer (the album that it was taken from).
