Pre-orders, Play.com

I was wondering if any of you fine folk had ever pre-ordered a new release, and if so, did the company ship it so it would arrive on the day of release or ship it the day of release. I’ve just ordered a load of David Lynch movies, as well as the 3 disc set for Spaced, and all except ‘Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me’ have been dispatched as it’s not out til the 08/08/05. Not that I’m worried, just impatient.

In my experience the stuff always arrives on the day of release, but some of my friends have had to wait a few extra days. Actually, once I pre-ordered a DVD for a Monday release, and by luck it arrived in the post on the Saturday before.

Some times you get it before it’s released, I got the last white stripes and audioslave album the thursday before it was out. Other times it’s a few days past, but thats possible down to royal mail.

Yeah, the thing is they say delivery takes 3-5 days. So if you pre-order something, they’ll send it to you 3-5 working days before the Monday of release (albums and DVDs are generally released on a Monday in the UK). Now, depending on how efficient or inefficient Royal Mail are, it might take longer or less time to deliver the package to you than play.com have calculated. I’ve only heard of a few cases where pre-ordered stuff has arrived late though.

Usually for me - pre orders arrive the saturday before the monday they are released, I have had stuff upto a week and a half before they are released though - I think play just ship em when they get em.

Royal Mail are actually very efficient IMO, at least compared to the postal service in Norway.

I just don’t get what those people moaning about Royal Mail are on about. I’ve worked for the post office here in Norway for 6 years and let me tell you - the service people get in the UK is a hell of a lot better.

Here’s a story about Royal Mail… I bought an A Team van for my friend’s birthday on eBay and it was sent to me recorded delivery. I missed the delivery cause I was at work but the card they left said I could have it delivered to my local post office for 50p. As I live behind a post office this seemed like a wise-buy.

So, I called in at the post office every day for the best part of two weeks and was always told ‘come back tomorrow’. I tried phoning the sorting office repeatedly and on the one occassion I got through I was just told to keep going back to the post office because it was definitely on it’s way.

Eventually I thought ‘fuck it’ and went down the the sorting office in person to find out what had happened… “You didn’t collect it within 7 days and because it was recorded delivery we sent it back to the poster.” GAH.

So I ended up having to contact the seller again, who said he’d been rather baffled by it’s return and yes, it would cost me another £5 for him to post it again.

Useless bastards, the lot of them (excluding my dear friend Tuesday, who is a post-lady and might read this).

Good stuff. I’d only used Play.com once before and was very happy with it. I’m getting it posted to Barcelona, so that may effect the delivery time, but it’s good to know that if they have it early, they’ll probably post it early.
