Concert tshirts

In Europe (or elsewhere in the world), do you have that unwritten rule that you’re not supposed to wear the tshirt of the band you’re seeing in concert? Here in the US, you can get ridiculed for doing it, so I’m just curious to see if this is a world-wide thing.

Hey Brendon,
I’ve never heard of that ‘unwritten’ rule. Although I have had occassions where I’ve wondered if I’m going to look a bit silly by doing just that, but I always end up with one. In fact, while I was out here in Canada (moving back to Scotland tomorrow) I caught a Megadeth concert, bought one of the T-shirts and put it on straight away. Everyone else was wearing some sort of Megadeth thing.

Haha…well if its a rule: Its stupid! I think it looks cool to see so many ‘the same’ T-Shirts. You’re no going to a sports match wearing a totally different outfit, not?
Just wear whatever you like. I put on the shirt that fits the mood i’m in.

I disagree, theres definently an ‘unsaid’ rule about not wearing the bands t-shirt your seeing.

I think its quite amusing really because it makes sense to wear their t-shirt to show support but I always seem wear some other bands t-shirt.

I guess its something to do with not wanting to look like a geek for the band. I kinda like being a geek sometimes…

It all dedpends on how much you like the band and how much you are prepared to show everyone else how much support you give them.

On the other hand most of the T? T-shirts I have I quite like anyway (design etc) so I wear them regardless.

hmmm never heard of this actually.. but seeing kids at concerts posing in brand new, never worn, antique band tee’s bought for $30+ on ebay, just to give the impression that they are harcore fans and has always been, when they were like 4 years old when that shirt was made.. it’s only laughable.

I blame it all on the movie PCU. If you haven’t seen it, there’s a scene where this guy goes to see his favorite band, and wears their shirt to the show. On the way there, his friend says ‘Oh man, don’t be that guy who wears the band’s tshirt to the show. Don’t be that guy!’

I was at a Soul Coughing show a few years ago and I wore one of their shirts to it—some guy walked up to me and actually said ‘Don’t be that guy!’ Since then I’ve wondered if this holds true everywhere else.

At the Zottegem gig, most of us were wearing T? shirts. There’s nothing wrong with showing that you support the band!

Over here if a band play in town, especially if they’re not so well known like Therapy?, if you have a t-shirt by that band, you wear it.

Although I did hear that when Morrisey played (im not sure if it was Belfast) he made anyone in the crowd who was wearing a Smiths t-shirt turn it inside out, which i thought was kind of arrogant / cool!

Don’t think that Morrissey rumour is true. Are you sure? Moz is proud of what he did with the Smiths. Also nice they gave a free concert for everyone wearing a Smiths-Shirt once.

Hmm maybe the thing I heard was a changed version of your story, or maybe everyone going to see moz started wearing smiths t-shirts cuz they thought theyd get in for free, and he got pissed off.

Well at the end of the day theres definately a link between Moz, smiths t-shirts, and concerts!

Wearing the t-shirt of the band in concert is for one thing, completely unoriginal, and for another, it’s totally 100% skanky behaviour. My philosophy on life is thus: because you’re at their concert, they’re gonna figure you kinda like them so what statement are your clothes making? And what is the point of clothes wearing if it doesn’t make a statement? So go to a concert in really nice/sexy/sweet/kinky/whatever you’re into type material and you’ll look cool and gorgeous and people will love you (if only cos you look like a pretty flower fairy). Anyway, to conclude, basically, band t-shirts smell. I have spoken.

Mmm…well not always all people go to a concert for a band they like…Some people just pop in to see something (If a band is not that well known of course). And how would you feel if you were playing a gig and no one wears your ‘Merchandise’?
Oh, fuck, what are we talking about anyway…just wear whatever you feel like…

I’ve gone to concerts where I was not only the only person in the crowd wearing their tshirt, but one of the only people in the crowd that knew who the band was. It didn’t seem to bother the band too much…people still paid money for tickets anyways.

I also mostly never wear my Therapy? shirts to Therapy? concerts, but always during the week!!! But if I go to another concert of another band, I always do wear my Therapy? shirt. Maybe it’s the unwritten rule, I don’t know.

I wear a Thin Lizzy shirt to pretty much everything. In Ireland everyone loves Thin Lizzy even if they haven’t heard more than 1 song, which is annoying but often works out well.
I don’t like people buying T-Shirts for things they weren’t at though.

I remember going to see Skunk Anansie and Muse before thay got big about 2-3 years ago and I saw a bloke with a Therapy?- infernal love t-shirt on. That is the one and only time I have seen a Therapy t-shirt and so want one but all the ones on the web-site are shite. I know it’ll be a tacky t-shirt and I’ve seen some respectable shameless t-shirts in the new rock sound but ya have ta win them. Anyone know where I can buy one except at the gigs as have no time or transport and live miles away from any gigs.

I must say, I love the Infernal Love shirt too, great picture on the front (same pic as the frontcover of the cd). Unfortunately, they don’t sell it anywhere anymore, and I don’t want a second-hand shirt. The ones from the site aren’t as nice as the ones they sell at gigs, if you ask me…
