Wall of Mouths

I got the same messages, I thought my ADSL was not working okay.

Hi guys, thanks for the heads up! There are indeed some performance problems with the wall of mouths, and I’m working with my provider to solve it, although part of the problem is that the boards (and the site) are getting more visitors each month for the last 9 months.

In case anyone cares about the techie stuff: I might upgrade the boards to a SQL Server backend instead of Access, but that is not sure yet.

I do think the performance has been a bit better for the last few days, right?

Are you using a DSN or JET Driver to access the database? God, I’d hate to think of how big the database has gotten since you started this page.

Of course, you could always rewrite the entire thing in PHP with a MySQL database! I suppose that would be pretty darn fast.

yeah, it’s very slow or nothing… except right at this moment, it’s been kinda fast…

Yeah, I’m working on it, but I appreciate it that you let me know about it. One part of the problem is that the database has gotten rather big (for an Access database that is), but the biggest problem is the increasing amount of visits, which Access can’t handle (because it’s single threaded). I use a DSN-less connection by the way, which is the fastest option.

MySQL and PHP is an option, but I like ASP better, and since I also use this at work, I like it better to use that and get more and more experienced with it. Of course, MySQL and PHP are free, and since I’m Dutch, that is a plus ;-)

However, like I said earlier I’m thinking of getting a SQL Server database backend, and I will talk to Michael about that next week. I hope you are not too bummed out by the bad performance of the Wall of Mouths right now, and will keep coming back..! I will do my best to solve the problems soon.

And could you do me all a favor? Please let me know if the speed of the rest of the site is good, and how it compares to the official site. I have to choose between getting SQL Server for this site or for the official site, so I would love to know which one has better performance for the ‘static’ pages, like response time, and download speed. My opinion is that my site (except for the Wall of Mouths) generally is faster.

Wow, this is the first time in a week I was even able to get on the board. Maybe you can just piggy-back the site on Therapy?’s server. That way you won’t have to pay extra for the SQL Server hosting.
