I eventually finished Wuthering Heights yesterday. I did get distracted by a very thick Marc Almond autobiography in the middle of it though. I appreciated WH and thought the writing was great…but it did drag on a bit. I was relieved when Heathcliff finally popped his clogs to be honest.

Next I have a history book to read about Anglo Saxon paganism. This was purely inspired by watching The Wicker Man.

Indeedy. I still have the director’s cut to watch which is about 20 minutes longer.

I love the music, creepy as fuck even though it shouldn’t be!

‘The Pillars of the Earth’ by Ken Follett

I’ve only read the first couple of hundred pages, but it’s good so far.

Recently read ‘Freaky Dancing’ by Bez. A good read. Never a Mondays fan, but a good book.

They’re darkly comic but tend towards the ‘space opera’. Try starting with ‘the player of games’, which should give you a good feel for what his sci fi’s like - and a scathing parody of capitalism/thatcherism, to boot. If you like it read on, if not stick with his ‘novels’. The Bridge is my favourite of these, but someone mentioned The Crow Road, which is also good. There are a few stinkers - Canal Dreams, Espedair Street and Dead Air really didn’t do it for me. Raw Spirit is non fiction and is a good read if you are a scotch whisky obsessive (like Banks).

I’ve just finished re-reading Stasiland by Anna Funder. It’s a collection of peoples’ experiences in East Germany before reunification. Absolutely heartbreaking stuff. The simultaneous read was ‘How mumbo-jumbo conquered the world’ by Francis Wheen. Equally heartbreaking , in its own way.

A book containing loads of absurd letters a bloke has written to loads of small British organisations, and the replies he receives. Really bizarre and funny :)
