Just what the beep is real metal.

Oh, how it never ends especially in the states. Must be a backlash of all the experimentation with hip hop. The people going on about this band isn’t metal enough and that one ain’t either. I’m only keen if metal can grow and diversify. Just one thing, it musn’t be crap.

Discuss my new found friends…
Just what is real in the world of metal. And will anything original in metal ever be liked.

I do like a bit of Metal, but there are so many distinct styles. My preferences would be early Metallica (although I do like the Load albums), Anthrax, Pantera, Iron Maiden and some Megadeth.
I also love bands like White Zombie and NIN, but we’re getting into the ‘what is Metal’ here. To me they are metal, others would get picky, and call them Industrial or whatever.
Some of the Nu (it’s spelt ‘new’) Metal bands are okay, but a lot of it sounds like bands taking the energy of a great band like Rage Against The Machine to make songs for moshing with their testosterone fuelled buddies.
The likes of Cannibal Corpse and Deicide etc… have never done anything for me, and believe me, I’ve tried. Just not my bag. I prefer clearer vocals.
Similarly, The Scorpians, Accept or Nightwish sound too sugary and FM friendly for my tastes.
So basically, I’ve got even less idea than I had before what real Metal is.

Oh, and I don’t think Accept is sugary. They’re awfully cheesy though. And their singer looks like Bassie.

That’s the problem, bands who do different things today that are related to the metal genre in some way are ripped off in the States and not respected. Surely a genre, yeah it’s a genre, such as metal which is based on rebellion should have bands out there that push boundaries? Not bands like Usurper saying things like this band isn’t metal enough because they don’t wear leather and worship Slayer. Fuck that, I always thought Korn were brave for doing something diferent but every fucking place you go, they are getting slagged off for being different. Why are so many metalheads such a bunch of purists? I listen to fucking Tears For fears and Slayer like that?
Thank God for bands like Therapy, NIN and Tool for doing different things..
