#

Started by Divers (Simon)

Well only a few more weeks untill the only albums being released are christmas comps, So i was wondering what peoples albums of 2005 have been so far. I’m only limiting myself to ten as i could go on for ages (and typing bores me)

so here is goes in no real order.

Arch Enemy- Doomsday Machine
Roadrunner United- All Star Sessions
This Is A Menace- No End In Sight
Mars Volta- Frances The Mute
Fiona Apple- Extraordinary Machine
The Fall- Fall Heads Roll
Anthrax- Alive 2
Lyrics Born- Same Shit Different Day
Queens Of The Stone Age- Lullabies To paralyze
Spiritual Beggars- Demons

I will mention Fantomas just because i love them:)

Has beeb a quiet year for my CD collection - doubt I’ve even bought 10 so will limit myself to:

Arcade Fire - Funeral
Nine Black Alps - Everything Is

Possibly would add Elbow to that, but need to go shopping first…

Most listened to albums remain as last year - anything by T?, Green Day’s American Idiot (also gig of the year) and The Killers’ Hot Fuss.

Film - The Descent

Book - The Evolutionist’s Tale

I dislike these things as I don’t seem to buy many ‘new’ releases in their year of release…

But I would go for Editors - The Back Room.

And the worst I’ve bought this year: Dandy Warhols - Odditorium…

Funeral by Arcade Fire came out in 2004 :p

It’d be my album of 2005 as well though. As for “real” 2005 albums…

1- The Fall - Fall Heads Roll
2- Eels - Blinking Lights And Other Revelations
3- Nine Inch Nails - With Teeth

Film: Wolf Creek

Book: I don’t think I read any that came out in 2005, but the best book I read this year was The Collector by John Fowles.

Have to admit, I haven’t been bowled over by much this year.

Here’s the best that I can think of

Pennywise- The Fuse
Turbonegro- Party Animals
Jimmy Eat World - Futures
Disturbed- 10,000 fists
Death Cab for Cutie- Plans

There were just as many I thought sucked

Green Day- American Idiot
Millencolin- Kingwood (very bitter about this one)
Weezer- whatever it was called

But “Funeral” is a 2004 album, it’s just the UK release came out in 2005. It made the top of so many “album of 2004” lists and was all over the indie media then that it’s not really fair to call it 2005.

Right, where do I begin…

The two System albums were okay, yet they could have done with one brilliant one.

This Is Menace was great yet Kerrang! soon forgot them.

Foo Fighters wasn’t bad, but Pennywise could’ve been better (they just repeat themselves).

Roadrunner All Stars and Akercocke - could go on about those albums forever and a day.

Since T? didn’t bring out anything this year, but playng their stuff still sounds fresh.

Find of the year is Converge - love the Jane Doe album (though it came out in 2001). Also got into Nick Drake and the only gig I went to was REM in Cardiff - totally top.

Film of the year is Green Street followed by Mean Creek. A History of Violence was pretty good, and Stoned looks interesting (though the UCI in Swansea are not showing the film, the bastards).

New book of the year would be Island Songs by Alex Wheatle, a total change from what heused to write about. But most of the books I’ve bought this year have been older titles (The Lonliness of the Long Distance Runner by Alan Silitoe being one of them).

I’ve bought loads of stuff this year, but my mind is blank at the moment, but I’ve covered most of it.

Eh, it’s alright. I don’t really “get” the hype about them, though. Geogaddi has a bunch of really nice melodies and it’s quite moody. This one and MHTRTC are simply pleasant but thoroughly unimpressive on the whole. They take one idea and repeat it for an album. Whereas…

Sigh. I wish people wouldn’t hate Coldplay so much. Sure, they’re not fantastic but they write better pop melodies than a lot of people at the moment. X&Y is a ridiculously pretty album, and whilst the production gets a bit choking, I just find it really nice to listen to, y’know?
The Stereophonics album’s alright, has some of their best work on, but has far too many of Kelly Jones’ “I can’t write a melody so I’ll sing three notes over and over and just make my voice grate more as it goes on” tracks. Still, their most consistent since Word Gets Around.
