Meh, he played for Man Utd. :p. Honestly though, as much as a respected footballer he was, he wasn’t half a fuck up with the drink. I mean imagine being the family of the son/daughter/whoever who’s liver went to Best when he needed one after years of abuse, only for him to drink himself stupid again.

It’s sad to see George finally beaten by the drink. People seem to forget that alcoholism is a medical condition, not a matter of wanting to pick up the booze, just ‘cos you feel like it.

I’m sure that he tried to kick the drink after the liver transplant, but when your body is so used to alcohol, it needs it.

I like to see George remembered for his football, and not his drinking.

RIP George.

His mother was an alcoholic as well and the drink killed her too.

In interviews he always seemed like a really nice bloke but we all know he had a dark side and there’s excuse no for violence or drink driving. It’s hard for me to feel sorry him because he had everything and just pissed it away.
A lot of the woman in his life complained about him but at the same time they’ve done very well being associated with him and Alex still uses his surname.

But anyway RIP George Best,he must have had a brilliant time when he was playing football and then going out to clubs knowing he could pull any woman he wanted.

I’ll have his spleen. They can donate it to me to facilitate conversations in pubs:

“What the fuck’s in that jar?”
“This? Why it’s George Best’s spleen.”

Title: NORTHERN IRISH LEGEND

i never understood jokes about dead people. stick your jokes up your arses and have some respect.

he was a northern irish hero and brought much joy to the people of NI and indeed the world. even to people (like me) too young to ever see him play except on video. he was no angel but he’s gone now and to make jokes of a disease he battled against most of his life is just plain wrong.

rest in peace george

I’m sure he was an amazing, talented footballer but I wouldn’t say a genious.

I wasn’t at all suprised that some fans of other teams couldn’t show a person respect. I take my hat off when I see a funeral going on and I don’t even know them!
But then again why do you have to keep fans from different teams apart at matches.

A lot of people saying having a drinking problem is a disease. Yes I can understand how difficult it must be to sort it out by if you’re born sober why drink so much in the first place. Surely a footballer would take care of their body..it plays a very big role in their job :p
I don’t know if I’m just being bias but I find it hard to feel sorry for people who drink too much. I’m sure being in the media didn’t help.
My dads mum had a problem and she died of a heart attack when he was 21. My dad is 44 and he had a heart attack 2 years ago..he now has MS and I wouldn’t doubt it if he died pretty soon. He still smokes, drinks and eats crap everyday. Maybe this is why I lack sympathy.

Sorry that’s enough of ranting. I just wanted to share my view :D a view of both sides

I just hope kids are inspired by his life on the pitch.

Aye, but minus the press though.

Rest easy, Mr Miyagi. You too George, enough of a man to admit that he had a real problem, and I’d rather remember him for that.

it depends how you look at it. if you had had the women he had you’d hardly view yourself as a fuckup.

and all this borrowing somebody elses liver shite. he was sober for 6 months before he had the transplant, did not jump any transplant queues, and did not “borrow” someones liver. he got it because someone died.

Title: Found this on another site, sums it up really:

George Best, the whole saga makes me feel a bit queasy. And here is why…

The man was probably the most talented Brit to pull on a pair of boots; that is beyond question. It is always sad when someone dies, regardless of circumstance. But I think the whole situation is not only grossly OTT, and also reflects terribly on modern day society.

I’m sure we’ve all read the media hype surrounding George Best. It has been stated “The biggest funeral in Britain since Princess Di’s”… And it’s at that point I totally lost any respect for the proceedings.

This is a man that died relatively young because of his personal choice to stick two fingers up to the world & P*ss his life away. This is a man that spent time in prison because he had no respect for others lives. He felt he had every right to constantly drink & drive (risking the lives of others in the process).

There is not a woman he has been with that hasn’t taken a beating at one point or another. Alex Best spent her 25th Birthday in hospital having broken ribs tended to, and that was said to be the norm in their relationship. Best said it himself on Parkinson “Oh we all give our wives a smack now & again”…… Well I don’t, and I have no respect for those that do.

When they have yet ANOTHER minutes silence for George Best this coming Saturday, I will spend that time thinking of the person who donated their liver so he could spend a few extra years P*ssing it up the wall, beating females to pulps, and selling his sordid little stories to the tabloids.

The over-dramatization! The sensationalism! And the shear bloody hypocrisy of those that humour Best even when he’s dead, yet destroy Gazza for similar crimes against humanity.

It all leaves a very sour taste in my mouth. But then I’ve never been a sad sheep hoisting up a tabloid newspaper like it was some sort of modern day bible.

I’d like to think those that ruined the minutes silence last Saturday & those that may ruin this Saturday’s do so for the right reasons…. Sadly I doubt it; they’re probably just a moronic & self-obsessed as the legend that is George Best.

As a footballer he was a class above, but he never was & never will be a hero to aspire to.

[ii]Originally posted by zipless:[/ii]Wow!

ok point taken, but even if he had never touched another drop he could still have died from the complications arising from his lung infection. his return to drink after the transplant actually had no bearing on his death - it was because he was more susceptible to infection as he had to take medication to supress his immune system so as his new liver would not be rejected.

and btw zipless i believe being sober for 6 months is a hell of an achievement for an alcoholic. it was because of this that he got a place on the liver transplant waiting list. not because he was famous.

i don’t want to post again on this topic. george screwed up his health and we all know this. but he was a hero to many and is gone. what good does it do slagging him off now he’s dead? andy is another NI legend who is not a saint but i suspect most on here would be up in arms if something happened to him because of his rock’n’roll lifestile and then he got a slagging.
