Setting Up guitars

Anyone any good at this? I want to know the best way to adjust your bass so I get the least fret buzz possible but without having the action ridiculously high. I’m experimenting but not sure what I’m doing! I’ve just done a Michael and put a low B where my E string should go because it was really buzzy past about the 10th fret but it hasn’t changed! Now its 1/2 inch opff the fretboard and horrible to play…help!

are you adjusting the neck or raising the bridge?

I was hoping to do both at the same time ie drop the saddles as i raise the bow out of the neck and stopping when the fretbuzz begins

what i’ve done in the past is just loosen the neck a bit and slid a plectrum between the neck and the body and tightened the neck back up. Now, i know this is a little unorthodox (!) and i’m not guaranteeing it’ll work, but it might be worth a try. Failing that its just a matter of tweaking the neck and the bridge a little until your happy. Hope that helps!!

hmmmm, i might try it! I’ll play with it a bit first. Aopparently its quite difficult to completely fuck it up so i’ll keep trying til i get something i like…!

This link is actually for a particular custom bass, but all the stuff about neck relief is good for any make.

Thanks for your help dudes, i’ve always avoided tinkering with these things cos I’m a disaster with technical things, i always end up makin things worse! But even I have managed to get it back to something playable!

I’ve done the sensible thing now and taken it to a pro! If anyone is interested it costs around £50 to get your guitar frets dressed and to have the truss rod and bridge set up perfectly.

…And it sounds wicked! Cos I do a Michael and have a low B instead of an E, its quite difficult to stop the buzz but somehow the guy done it! On all the frets!
