The thought of getting a gun never crossed my mind. I am certain it will only will make things worse.

It works both ways. Manslaughter for Tony Martin, and a prison sentance for the burglar.
Maybe the Tony Martin case is a bit of a strong one to use as an example, because both parties broke the law and were victims of the other person’s crime.
Maybe a better case to point out is the one where a burglar spooked a dog which was asleep at night. The dog bit the burglar, and the dog is now awaiting a decision on whether it will be put to sleep for biting the burglar. How is this right?
