Epiphone and Yamaha have some rather cheap but reasonable basses, but you can also try to buy a second hand bass. That’s what I did, many years ago.

Encore. They make bog standard bass’s and guitars at low prices. They usually do a package where you get a Bass, an amp, and some kind of sheet music book for around £130, but i’ve actually seen that package as little as £99. Just shop around man, don’t be scared to go into a music store and ask for the cheapest thing they have.

And good on yer! There are too many guitarists out there and not enough bassists!! :)

Status bass ;) just kidding *g*

i started to play 13 years ago, when i was 13 … thinking of it, this really is getting me down :( 26 oh my god? what happenend to my life?

i started out with a cheap cheri bass. as far as i know its just the same as chevy basses. It wasn´t really pleasing and his weight was enourmous. i think it cost 200 Euro or something. new strings, cable, etc. inclusive

but i say, if you get comfort with a cheap and shitty bass, you will notice a quick step forward in your playing capability if you get the chance to buy a comfortable bass that fits you well, like status bass would do :)

And Michael did play that bass on tg and il.

I got my Ibanez GSR 200 for £105 second hand in mint condition and it’s a pretty good bass, especially for its price.

They retail anywhere between £150- £200 new, usually cheaper on ebay, baragin for a nice looking and feeling and sounding bass than the cheap yamaha’s.

Yeah i went to swansea a while back and the guy in Rowlands suggest one of those yamah packaes i think i was £200 with a few extra bits of pieces ( spare strings a fx pedal and tuner) However he told me to hold off as they were planning theyre own companie with other local shops and were planning to use the same manafactures who put together the yamah stuff and would be able to sell em cheaper than Yamaha. I guess il check this shop out again when im at my dads.

get a peavey grind bass. It costs a bit more, but I can’t imagine anyone on earth being rubbish at bass. it’s a doddle. Tricky to get great at it, of course, but it’s a piece of piss to learn.

As for books… don’t bother. Teach yourself from songs. Work out what notes go with what.

And for the love of god; DO NOT get an Encore!

Just try to play to the music you like to listen to. Helps alot to get things started and stay motivated.

Theres nothing wrong with Encore for the beginner! Thats where i, and several friends, started!

Its well and good that you can play bass and find it “a doddle”, but there are young enthusiasts out there who are picking up instruments for the first time, and are not going to be able to learn it in five minutes by listening to their stereo!

My boyfriend wants me getting started with Hartke, they have quite cheap packs for starters, and he says that those basses are very good.

I think Encore used to have a bad name, but I dont think this is really the case anymore - I have an Encore Thunderbird and it is a fucking fantastic sounding instrument and great fun to play.

I have an Encore SG as well, and £pounds£ for instrument, its a bargain!

There is no point in spending £600 on a bass to find out you dont like it…

OK, I may be jilted from ‘the school bass’, which was a shitty old Encore… but I still say Peavy kick their asses no problem… about £2-300 will get you a quality instrument you can take from learning to early gigging. I think it’s worth it. Oh, and I mean bass is a doddle in comparision to other instruments- learning any instrument obviously takes time and dedication.

I have a Peavey which is a copy of a Fender Jazz bass, and I can vouch for it… think I picked it up for about £100 and it plays well and sounds fine after 10 years of abuse!

i’ve got a Vintage V900 Bass ( http://www.jhs.co.uk/vintagebass.html ) which is my first and only bass. I’ve been playing bass for about four years now, and i’ve never needed a different one, it came very well set up, and i’ve used a vareity of different strings on it.

It might be slightly over the £150 range someone said above but really it’s worth it for the active electronics, becuase you’re not likely to want to upgrade it for quite some time

although wait a minute, i don’t play rock music on it..

maybe just best to go to a shop and try some out then!

Best advice: see above, go try some, in fact try them all! Go for the one that FEELS the best. There are still some basses today i don’t like the necks on simply because they feel too different to what i’m used to.
