I just caught up with the band’s diary entries of the last months and one of them broke my heart:
Quote (author unknown):
the song writing itself is eclectic. there’s moments of “what should i be today?”. I can write pop songs alright but is that what i want to be doing? Pop-rock is a funny currency. When you get it right, in our case, with Screamager, Nowhere, If it Kills Me etc. it can be exhilarating and the melody and conviction of the song raises it above being just another of a million melodic rock songs but when you get it not-so-right, lonely cryin’ only, Voodoo Doll it could be any other band and also betrays the true nature of what we’re actually about as a band.
I really like “Voodoo Doll” and I LOVE “Lonely, Cryin’, Only”. It’s definitely in my top 3 of Therapy?-songs. What’s not to love about it? The lyrics are great, the recording is brilliant and the music isn’t obtrusive, but genuinely beautiful. It definitely doesn’t sound like any other band. Yes, it’s a nod to Roy Orbison but totally Therapy? Now I’ve lost all hope that I’m ever going to hear this song live again. Unfortunately, that seems to be the case with most of the “Semi-Detached” album, which is one of the band’s finest moments, in my opinion.
