Not literally, I mean;

Tell us what your favourite album is AND WHY.
I get bored of these “what u listening to?” threads when they turn into just a long list, so tell me something about your fave records - you may even make some new converts to them along the way.

My favourite Album ever is Money Marks “Push The Button”, it’s hard to say why but it just is. If you don’t know this he is the keyboard player for the beastie boys. His stuff mainly keyboard/organ/Piano based, nice and funky quite retro sounding at times. The album is a mixture of instrumentals and great tunes that get stuck in your head. He pretty much plays everything on the album and has a great voice, and it doesn’t stay in one sort of style. I first heard it the year it came out round a friends house while stoned and i made her play it three times in a row i was so taken with it. The song Hand in your head was the only song i knew off the album before hearing it as it was sort of on his first release. Also live has been two of the most enjoyable show i have been to, as i really was made to feel part of the show.

There was no point me talking about troublegum or babyteeth as i think people know about them

One of my all time favourites would be “Ill Communication” by the mighty Beastie Boys. It’s all round sound, the diversity of the songs make this a truly great album. And the music was new at that time (still is!). HipHop skills mixed with real instruments, good and sometimes really funny lyrics. I am also very fond of the instrumental tracks (a big up to Money Mark, see above post). So many good memories of seeing them live and strolling around BROOKLYN for days. The perfect soundtrack for a trip to NYC. And of course one of the best videos EVER: Sabotage :D

OK it doesn’t have to be your definitive all-time favourite, just tell us about an album you can wax lyrical about!

I haven’t really thought about one yet, though I’ll have a go later, I just wanted to read what everyone else was gonna put, to be honest!

Some others off the top of my head that I love to death.

Descendents- Milo goes to collage. 20mins of some of most addictive punk out there, songs about love and coffee mainly. Most punk bands have a lot to thank them for.

Carcass-Heartwork One of the best produced metal album i have heard, timeless is all i can say about it. The influence of this album and band are endless in todays metal scene. Every song a corker.

Kyuss- Welcome to sky valley. Riffs downtuned and groovy as fuck, QOTSA are great but will always live in the shadow of this band Rated R came close though. JOsh homme stuck to what he does best and play guitar and let John Garcia do the talking this blokes voice is huge. Love it to death.

Coldcut- Let us play Cut and paste magic from the DJ pioneers. More beats samples and new sounds to find and keep you interested for years. One song even has a chainsaw solo need i say more.

Two Lone Swordsmen- From The Double gone chapel. Dark and dirty elctro with a live band twist from Andy Weatherall. The man partly responsible for making screamadelica by Primal Scream so fucking good. This is a dark fucked up record, a mixture of live bass and drums mixed with electro flavour and the twisted vocals of the man himself. A lot different to there ealrlier releases which are just as good.

There you go just some more, i could go on for days.:)

I love Ocean Machine(Devin Townsend) - Biomech

This is probably the best thing Devin Townsend has done (including Strapping Young Lad)… The album kicks off with ‘7th Wave’, a really epic and huge sounding song and the album just flows from then on. I can listen to this album over and over and I would definitely put it in my top 5 fav albums of all time. I dont know what else to say other than it fucking rocks and people should check it out.

Ok, i’ll take the Divers approach of “Albums i bloody well love and could harp on abot forever”:

Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited: Ultra cool, smart, THE most amazing lyrics you will ever hear ever ever ever, and at over 40 yrs old stands repeated listening.

Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream: From the quiet/loud intro of Cherub rock thru to the swooning Luna a masterclass in 90s alternative rock.

Wildhearts - Earth Vs - An amazing riff fest from start to finish, with more chorus’s that you can shake a pointy stick at.

Soul Asylum - Hang Time - I don’t know anybody else in the world that owns this album and this, if any, is probably closest to being my absolute favorite. The sound of a band desperately trying to make it.

Pixies - Trompe Le Monde - Always gets overlooked, this is the Pixies gone metal, and its fucking awesome.

thats 5 at random, i feel lie i’m betraying all the ones i’ve missed!!! :D

Awesome British pop-rock. Huge hooks and buckets of fun, while still rocking hard.

Oh and I second the Earth Vs The Wildhearts motion.

The Holy Bible - Manic Street preachers. I first heard it when i was 14 and immediatly my life changed, it opened up a whole new World to me and way of thinking. Musically, it was punk, but not trying to copy the past - this was an intelligent, updated version of punk. Also i had just started learning bass and Nicky’s basslines really sounded massive.

Version 2.0 Garbage. Being a metalhead was getting boring -this is the 1st pop/dance album that i could actually relate to and rock out to at the same time. Great melodies, Shirley was trying to avoid female cliche’s with the lyrics and musically there’s so much going on i still can’t fathom out whats going on!

Kings X - Dogman. Ok so they’re a bit cheesy but this is when grunge/ nu metal was invented basically. They took REALLY heavy guitars and made really beautiful tunes out of them and Dug’s voice is so soulful. Sometimes groove heavy monsters, some rock anthems and even when they slow right down the intent is still there without sounding boring or like they’re trying too hard to write a ballad. The tones on the instruments are really sharp and crisp, they all sing brilliant harmonies, basically its what the Beatles would be doing if they were still around.

My all time favourite is the Master Of Puppets album of Metallica. It’s hard to explain why, but it’s easily the best album ever for me. The album begins with battery that’s just the best opening song an album can have, during the whole track there are fast kicking riffs with excellent vocals from James Hetfield, and the end of the song is magnificent. Then a couple of seconds later there’s the explosion of the legendary Master Of Puppets himself, my favourite classic, no words for that. Then there’s the madness of The Thing That Should Not Be, with Sanitarium, another brilliant song. After that 8 minutes of pure trash metal with Disposable Heroes followed by my allt time favourite Leper Messiah, with a great intro and a great rithm, cool riffs and a heavy James. Then there’s the masterpiece of Cliff Burton with Orion, 8 minutes of instrumental music that is beautiful, heavy and most of all melodic with beautiful music from Cliff and great solo’s. Then when you’re done with that you can hear the famous intro of Damage Inc. end then it’s again a finish up with very fast kicking riffs like it begon with battery, great guitar in that song and again a magnificent James. There isn’t a second on that album that bores me or sounds cheap. It all fits together, just brilliant.

Pitchshifter - http://www.pitchshifter.com

amazing drum and bass techno electronica punk metal, there is no other way to describe it apart from years ahead of tis time as no one has even attempted to rip it off.

Mindless Self Indulgence - Frankenstein girls will seem strangely sexy

30 tracks of insane Jungle Pussy Punk
with a singer who sounds (and sometimes looks like) a chicken on crack, all songs in alphabetical order yet the album flows perfectly and each song title is appropriate to the song.

Therapy? - the enitre back catalogue, though i shouldn’t need to sell that to anyone here

Helmet - Betty

the basis of Nu metal yet at least 50 times better. Helmet and Faith No More are responsible for nu metal. most riffs were ripped off from Helmet while a million kids tried to sing like Mike Patton.

anyone who can incorprate jazz into original stripped down and dry yet uber heavy metal is a god, plus Page Hamilton did all the lead guitar on Unbeliever which just adds bonus points.

Uh, that´s hard.

Well, I´ve chosen albums that had the greatest impact on me during the last 15 years.

- Fugazi - 13 Songs
Ian McKaye has such a great voice!
And what I really adore is his DIY-attitude.

- Public Enemy - Apocalypse ‘91
I love this album, it´s timeless. Chuck D still is one of the rappers with the best technique and the best lyrics

- Bomb The Bass - Unknown Territory
concerning the production it is at least 5 years “ahead of its time”, great, smooth electronic music.

- Mclusky - Do Dallas
Great noisy 3-piece! Reminds me of the Pixies and early Nirvana/ Therapy? stuff.

- Turbonegro - Apocalpyse Dudes
Huuuuuge album. Good to sing along to.
;-)

- Speedy J - A Shocking Hobby
Mean, mean electronics. Louder than guitars!

- Therapy? - Suicide Pactn - You First
Although my love started with Troublegum, I think that this is my favourite T?-album. It´s noisy, snotty and LOUD.

- Epoxies - selftitled
Female-fronted, synthesizer-driven Punk-Rock. Simple and good for drinking

- Godspeed you black emperor. - Lift your skinny…
Love their music. It´s dramatic, it´s epic and unique.

There are so many more albums to mention, I think I forgot at least 20 albums…

i would have gone for that one as well. i like the rawness, that there’s no polished production whatsoever. and i love the diversity. that they can go from something like “archives of pain” to softer stuff like “this is yesterday” and nothing seems out of place.
and i agree with you, this record has some amazing bass lines!

I do not know where to begin here.

Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind. Everyone says Number of the Beast, but this one’s got the Trooper on it.

Metallica - Master of Puppets. Like I really need to say anything.

Joy Division - Closer. Fragile and beautiful, thought provoking and powerful.

Black Sabbath - any of the first six albums.

Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Welcome to the Pleasuredome. I know I’m going to get my arse kicked foe this, but this was the album that got me into music, and for a pop album, its pretty dark, so there.

right now I’m totally into all this new sludgy doom and stoner stuff, Isis especially and their “celestial” is just one big mindfuck and takes to another place every time again. All this layers and the build-up of the tracks that work slowly towards huge orgiastic climaxes, yeah fucking great.

One of my all-time favourtites is Voivod’s Negatron. I’m aware that for many people this is supposed to be their weaker period, but it ain’t. The duo of Negatron and Phobos are two heavy dark monsters of avant-garde spacey droning thrash metal, really you should check them. Negatron is more straightforward, Phobos more subtle.

Morbid angel’s Blessed are the sick, I like it better than Altars, it’s better produced more balanced and has Fall from grace on it.

I used to dig a lot all these dark nineties metalcore and Integrity’s Systems overload and Humanity is the devil are the darkest most destructive warped metalcore around. Don’t get yourselves fooled by Caliban or Chimaera Integ is the real thing.

Kingston wall and Jimi Hendrix Exp, for they made the best psychedelic rock tunes ever. Both made three official studio albums and every track on those six is just a little closer to freeing your mind from all that bugs you on this earthly surface.

I’m a sucker for “that 70’s feeling” but one of my favourites is Johnny Thunders and the heartbreakers, more punk than punkrock but basically just rock ‘n roll. Good grooving rock ‘n roll with a ballsy attitude, much like the ramones but yeah more loose.

List is endless but ik ga een kleine opmerking in het Nederlands maken: Doe Maar is de enige popgroep die ik de moeite vind. Ik kan alle nummers meezingen en ben er geen moment beschaamd voor.
