I love this thread. Actually putting a tab up would kinda spoil it.

Oh… that’s too bad, I have just started writing out the tab. I remember reading a thread somewhere about the bendy notes in this song. I don’t think it’s a whammy, I think it’s neck bending, or behind-the-nut bending. Anyone else here confirm??? I think I’ve worked it out, but would appreciate input.

Joe.

Could be a pitch-bend pedal… sounds kinda artificial that way…

Oh, and its one song in Drop D- Misery. Unless there’s more, but I can’t remember right now.

Pretty sure, otherwise it’s be tricky to hit that E powerchord. It makes sense if you try it.

It just means that when you play the main riff, you just slide your fingers to the second fret instead of having to change to an open E powerchord formation.

Cool. Has anyone bothered tabbing out the little noisy bits Andy does during the verses?

Meh… I doubt Andy could do it perfectly again. He’s just arsing about with harmonics and stuff… do the same.

You don’t need drop D for any of Infernal Love, Misery is just simple chords.

I know you don’t NEED it. Just makes it easier. And it makes it a lot easier. I don’t know about you, but I find going back and forth from an open E powerchord to an F powerchord in 1/8th notes at 120 bpm a bit tricky, to be honest. Well, you can barre the second fret on the a and d strings with your middle finger and use your ring and index ones to hit the F…

or you could turn the tuner round a bit.

Well, only on bass. Guitar… well, I’m OK. But that’s still faster than death metal fast.

Actually I just went over to the acoustic in the corner, and I can do it pretty easily, but not everyone is as good as me ;)

Nah, I geuss it’d be tricky for beginners and it’s really just unnesscesary hastle.

Exactly. When I found out that Lit tune their guitars to E flat and then play songs that are a lot easier in standard tuning, I just wanted to slap their guitarist. He was bitching in an interview about how people played their songs in standard tuning and that wasn’t “the right way” and it was “so much easier that way”. Why shoot yourself in the foot by making the songs more difficult to play?

Misery is -definitely- a lot easier to play in Drop-D IMHO. But all this talk has got me wondering how it was played on the album. I don’t remember seeing the song played live, which would be a great clue…

Why have arguments about guitar tunings in the 1st place?! Everyone plays differently anyway. I’m still not sure why people find Misery much easier with drop D, there’s only a handful of chords in it.

If you guys like weird and wonderful tunings, check out Neon Ballroom by Silverchair (open Eb sus2 anyone?!) for some weird and wondrful tings.

Yeah Daniel Johns certainly got funky with the tunings on the last couple of Silverchair albums.

I think he uses Open C# Minor on some songs on Neon Ballroom!

And some even more weird ones on Diorama. Both are great albums.

I’m all for weird tunings, but different tunings are supposed to enable you to play songs you wouldn’t be able to in standard tuning. I say play songs in the tunings that make it the easiest - there’s no point in tuning into a weird tuning when standard does the job.

Very practical. But i like to mess about with tunings every once in a while, keeps things interesting. I don’t know how Daniel Johns found those tunings and wrote songs around them but it certainly makes for more interesting listening than the usual C,G,D, E
