You guys know your stuff, please tell me if these companys suck or something.
BC rich make bizarre looking guitars and Kerry King is their biggest player. Do they look cool but sound crap?
Are they just gimmicky guitars for people who just want to look cool?
Thanks guys!

I don’t know about Dean, but B.C. Richs with thier wacky designes (a lot of sharp corners) aren’t exactly comfortable.

They were bigger in the early 80’s. Alot of metal bands played them.

Actually the Warlock is surprisingly comfortable to play. It’s heavy, though, and the stock pickups aren’t anything to write home about.

bc rich used to make some great guitars in the 70’s/80’s.A lot of my heavy metal friends try and get hold of them because some of them really are good. Then the 90’s came and they started making pointy things, and all those gimmicks. And ended up being a cheap guitar company. If you watch The Murder City Devils-Rock’roll wont wait dvd, you’ll see them supporing motorhead, using bc.richs just so they can smash them up at the end of the show.Pretty funny.Dean have done and do make some nice guitars, but its usually only metal heads that buy them because they are so well suited for that style. Why not try some of the ESP guitars?

i love the mockingbird shape, i’ve stil got my cheap mockingbird copy, but i wouldn;t buy any BC Rich from anything below the NJ Classic range where you actually start getting good quality instruments (around £500)

never really seen many dean guitars and what i have have never really impressed me. if Dimebag got them make his siganture model and then moved to washburn that implies something to me about the quality of Dean, plus the only place i know near me that stocks Dean is the shitty music shop in town who have 1 proper Gibson in the shop, the rest are cheap brands.

but unless you can afford and really really want a good BC Rich, id go for ESP LTD range, well infact i did, quality guitars for low amounts, even the entry level model pisses on cheap BC Richs and thats just with the stock pickups.

I guess they’re just brands that never made it through… like Wal and spector basses, standard in the 80’s. Dead today.

No, they look crap and sound crap. And feel crap, and play crap and are, in fact, crap.

Michelangelo… that ‘ambidexterous’ bell-end also plays them. I think that puts the final coffin in their nail…

I was actually going to buy that, but I saw the twat from Busted/Son Of Dork playing one, so I didn’t in the end.

I think of BC and Dean guitars as being too met-uhl for me anyway. I’m more into rock and punk bands than bands like Pantera or Slayer.

i think its a bit strange saying that they haven’t “taken off”. A lot of metal bands use BC Rich, and there are a few signature model Dean guitars on the market too.

I mean, they’re never gonna rival Fender or Gibson, but i think they probably sell a fair few.

They’re just a bit gimmicky really, you aint gonna buy a BC Rich if you make folk music, know what i mean! Although you probably should. Hmmm…

I played a Bc Rich Warlock in a punk band once people used to come up to me and say why was I playing that guitar that it didn’t suit the type on music I was playing and crap like that personally I like playing my bass it’s surprizingly comfortable to play and the sound is fine for what I do, people put guitars into boxes like music (i.e genres) which is bullshit take T? for example they don’t like to be cornered into a certain style of music they do what they want to do the same should go for guitars.I think the reason Bc Rich or Dean haven’t “took off” as you call it is the small-mindness of the buying public/players and the way the companys advertise them.:(

End of rant.

Why did you stop? Or do you mean that you no longer play in the band?

I’ve heard Warlock Basses are neck-heavy, is that true?

I moved a few hundred miles away from where the band was so it imploded into nothing :(

I had a Fender squire bass once that the neck was heavier then my Warlock and a Jackson that the neck was lighter on but it only had 21 frets as opposed to 24 on the Warlock it’s not that bad and if it is you get used to it.

Slash used to play a Mockingbird on “You Could Be Mine” live and I thought he looked cool as hell. But then, he always does.

And I think I saw Paul Stanley play one at some point, too. That guy will pose with any guitar he can get his hands on, though.

Problem with the BC Rich range is that it is always gonna be seen as a Metal guitar, whereas the Gibsons and Fenders of this world have been used for all kinds of music, and don’t suffer from the same kind of stereotyping.

The problem with BC Rich is the quality and feel of the instrument, and although I’ve never played a BC Rich bass, I can’t see it rivaling my Peavy in terms of feel and sound.

I always think of those guitars as ‘metal’ guitars. Matt Bellamy from Muse plays a pointy Dean style guitar on the Hullabaloo dvd, not sure what it is exactly though.

Anyone else seen any recent bands trying to save these types of guitars from the metal graveyard?! :)
