must have albums (you don’t have)

#

Started by Theng

I guess y’all are familiar with the phenomenon: must haves. Records you needed to buy in order to keep your credibility. Many of these are probably covered in layers of dust now and are only surfaced on special occasions like the wee hours of a well inebriated homeparty. Here’s a list of some must haves, I don’t have. Usually just because I didn’t like’em enough to justify a purchase to my ever thinning purse. Some I never bought just because you were supposed to have them, at times I’m very awkward ;-)

Nirvana - Nevermind, MTV unplugged

Metallica - Black album (i did buy StAnger, I’m awkward told you)

Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks

Deus - Worst Case Scenario (and all other Belgian arty farty so called rockbands)

RATM - S.T.

The Peppers - bloodsugarsexmagic, californication

Rammstein - Mutter

System Of a Down - toxicity (i didn’t steal, steal this album)

offspring - smash

Pearl Jam - Ten, us

U2 - (not one I have)

White Stripes - Elephant

Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs, Bloc Party, Interpol… What’s so special about these?

Beastie Boys - License To Ill (must say I really dig some of their later stuff)

Bob Marley - Legend, Exodus

Slayer - Reign In Blood (I’ve got a decade of aggression, that rocks!)

Foo Fighters, QOTSA,

Here’s some must haves I do have;
Therapy- Troublegum, Infernal Love (no surprise I guess)
Sepultura - Roots
Dog Eat Dog - All Boro Kings (it was very common in my teenage circles anyway)
Napalm Death - Scum
Carcass - Symphonies Of Sickness
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
Captain Beefheart - Trout mask Replica
Stooges - Funhouse (one of the very few records in the whole list that really deserves this tag)

Anyhow how do you all think about this matter? Wich famous records you never bought? Did you ever feel sorry for buying a so called must have?

Don’t get me wrong, Led Zep are OK and I do have some of their stuff, but never really “got” them in a big way.

And Radiohead…

I think what puts me off is exactly what this thread says - I have seen OK Computer top so many polls and lists and blah blah blah and..well, it doesn’t need another fan, does it? Let’s not be a greedy album, eh? You have lots of friends already, let me go and play with my Smiths CDs.

Oh wait, they probably come under overrated too, but i like them, so, erm, there.

You are totally wrong Dennis. Tommy is masterpiece! Forget about that “opera” thing if it’s annoys you, Tommy may be “opera” but how many operas can be played by four piece band? ;)

Tommy is in my personal Top10 like Led Zeppelins first album but like it has been said many times before, another man’s shit is another man’s honey… :D

Theng wrote:

Captain Beefheart - Trout mask Replica

Now, that’s overrated shit. I don’t catch that “thing” Captain Beefheart supposedly has. Sorry.

Oh, and if The NME are to be believed ~( and as we all know, they are not ), then we would all own copies of Libertine and Babyshambles albums.

:o id rather invite james blunt round my house and get him to do a solo acoustic show for me.

on helium.

I’ve done an enormous mistake… I’ve already got all of these albums for a long time.

Except the Black Album

I can understand you regret buying Nirvana, Franz Ferdinand, Interpol or Bloc Party (don’t agree though) but regretting Joy Division goes beyond my comprehension.

and Punkwak, how can you not like Songs by The Admiral?

The new one’s quite good though, lucky, cos if they’d released another Shatterproof, I would’ve given up on them!

yeah, same here. One of those “is it just cos he died?” type bands.

A few promising tunes, but they would be better in the hands of a more competent band (for example even the New Order versions of them sound a lot better*).

*Waits for lots of abuse.
