I had an argument with sb about that once, I said it was self-indulgent outside of a G3 gig to do a 10-minute solo, and she said if the guitarist can play that well, why shouldn’t he be allowed to show off how well he can play? To which I remarked that the only gig she had been to was Eminem, and one of her favourite albums was ‘Brothers In Arms’. In response to which she shut her mouth.

I play guitar, I love the instrument, I could play and listen to it all day…

…but I’d rather stick lit sticks of dynamite in my ears than have to listen to a G3 concert or a Steve Vai solo.

back in the murky depths of the late eighties/early nineties i was a huge fan of Vai and satriani and Malmsteen. But i couldn’t go see them, to stand and watch someone do that constantly would be dull. I like to go to a gig to have a couple of drinks and sing. A lot. And i’ve been known to tap my foot once in a while. Yeah, crazy, i know.

Not forgetting plenty of water and a good night’s sleep.

And you should remember your 5-a-day fruit and veg, young men.

I have been watching Metallica DVDs this week, and can anyone explain the point of Jason Newsted twiddling away with his foot on a wah wah when they could just put in another song?

*shudders*

Ah-Ha!, I think I see the problem here.

You see, heavy metal solos, particularly bass and drum ones are passe and contrived. Stick on some Claypool (maybe C2B3) solos. Amazing stuff, very musical and simply incredible technicality. Or listen to some Niason.

Oh, and of course ; METALLICA ARE FUCKING WOEFUL! ALWAYS HAVE BEEN AND ALWAYS WILL BE!!!

Like “Hmmmm, I know they’re gonna come back on cos the house lights are still down, the roadies aren’t dismantling things and, well, they haven’t played their two biggest hits yet”

Haha yeah, it would be much cooler if bands blasted off with their 2 biggest hits , just to shake things up a bit sometimes. :p

The first one is dull as fuck! Just as bad as watching a guitar solo! It’s just wanking, twiddling for twiddling’s sake.

The second one is great, very musical and tuneful…but, as it isn’t really the same instrument as the bass guitarists we have been talking about, it doesn’t really count as the same thing, to me.

A bass solo is a no-no everytime, IMO!

(Same for stand-alone solos on any instrument)

the guy who plays the super mario bros theme on his 11string bass, is a bass player, he just develops and produces his own basses. it is a bass he plays of course!

the first one. well i think it has much more interessting things in it. bass = groove. without it, the band is shit.

i think you have to be able to play a lots of technics etc, just to be able, to play the music you like. perhaps i would find bass solos more boring, if there were more good bass players around. but most of them are just “hey i want to be in a band, 1st guitar and 2nd guitar are no longe available, drums is too difficult, lets play bass, just 4 strings!”

thats just awful!

LOL :D

I usually find its indie music where the bass thunks along with whatever the guitar does. And Jason Newsted - the most boring bassist ever! The guy out of Rancid - now thats a bass player!, Dirk from In cubus is awesome, there’s loads!
