I disagree.

It is 12 years since his death mind. What was groundbreaking then is not really when you are seeing it for the first time now. I hear the Beatles and the Stones and wonder what all the fuss is about - but i’m sure in their day it was a different story.

I agree with Deadset> Even if he isn’t considered to be cutting edge anymore a lot of his stuff is still funny. Im always in the pisses whenever I hear it.

I think he is extremely funny and had great delivery. He recycled a lot of material but it was really funny, listening to it today a lot of the stuff he was saying about Iraq has come round again with Bush Jr.

So many comediens took influence from Bill Hicks and it still shows today.

One of the funniest comedians ever IMO.
You have to see an entire show though. If you just watch a bunch of clips then he comes across like a lot of comedians (not that funny). You have to see a complete show.

I thought the guy was amazing. So many people have ripped him off that when you hear him for the 1st time these days the impact is lost a bit. He has a new book out written by his mates who tell of how they knew him etc and that is crap though.

I gotta say I don’t think he was as amazing as his reputation. I found his stand up shows slow and without any flow. Too many silences just loses the audience I think.

I’m sure everything he stood for was/is revolutionary and outspoken, but as a comedian I just don’t find him funny.

Give me Eddie Izzard any day.

I think when he got into the toilet-humour part of his repertoire - and the whole sucking-the-devils-cock routine - it was all a bit “woah look at how shocking I am”, and rather dull.

The political stuff, however, was awesome - great delivery, great timing.

The stuff about JFK and about gun-law etc is just classic stand-up, that should be part of the National Curriculum.

I didn’t like him much at first, either, but his stuff has grown on me. (Some favourite bits would be The Beatles recording “Yellow Submarine”, Hicks describing why true men don’t go to dance clubs or him talking about how he mutilated other kids in school by accident).

Still, I do believe he’s overrated. He could be vulgar to a point where it was just getting annoying and boring at times. And he definitely wasn’t the genius or saviour people have made him out to be. On the other hand, some of his stuff is still relevant today and I would love to hear what he had to say about politics and problems in the world these days. You know, after all it did take a lot of guts for someone to speak his mind the way he did.

Speaking of bands name checking Bill Hicks. Here are more examples:

Mclusky: “We take more drugs than a touring funk band”

Faith No More: “It’s always funny until someone gets hurt and then it’s just hilarious.”

And Radiohead dedicated “The Bends” to Bill Hicks.

Loads of bands have mentioned him as an influence, RATM, Therapy?, One Minute Silence, Tool etc. It doesn’t make him funnier, it raises his profile and gets people to dig new things they may not have discovered on their own.
Lets face it, Richey Manic wasn’t a genius but he has been deified by a huge amount of people.

Better to have 4 impeccable DVD’s and a couple patchy ones than to be exceedingly overrated and not actually that good to begin with :o

What I hate about Hicks is that people make him out to be a saviour or a genius. He was neither. He wasn’t the best stand up comedian of all time, either, but he did have a lot of memorable and funny routines. Sometimes he just got angry, though, and that wasn’t particularly funny. The way he stood up against all things commercial was respectable, though.

True! I hate to agree but yeah I think the cock jokes did drag on a bit sometimes. His anti-corporate stance was brilliant - if only our rock bands these days were truer, they should listen to him!

Some things were a bit overbearing, like the whole goatboy thing. It’s only funny for about 5 seconds. Still, I don’t think I’ve seen many comedians that have been as good as him.

How are y’all feeling this shit he?

I’m on a big Hicks trip, but don’t always get everything, especially the jokes on the anglo-american relations.

I know one thing though, you don’t boil pizza.

We’ve had threads about Bill before, needless to say he’s a true legend. If you’re gonna check him out i think the “philosophy” cd is a good a place as any, kinda like a greatest hits. Its fantastic to hear him slating George Bush Snr when we are currently watching his son do an even worse job. :)
