What is R&B. Serious Question

#

Started by Sabotage

I always thought it was stuff like early Rolling Stones and Status Quo, ZZ Top, Steve Miller Band blah blah etc. You get my drift.
No-one I’ve ever asked (lots) has ever explained either…

what I’ve said above is rubbish

or

how the R&B of today (Destiny’s Child etc) is even remotely similar to the “old” R&B

I agree…but why are the 2 completely different styles of music called by the same name.
I can’t see ANY closeness whatsoever.

It would be like calling Metal and Jazz by the same name.

Going home now for a long weekend

Catch y’all soon

I think In the early days it was called rhythm and blues because thats the sound the stones and the who were playing. But now its just a convient pidgeon hole for the record labels and shops to sell cds with. And i think its horrible btw

R&B started out as a label to put on the up tempo blues that black musicians were playing around 1920 onwards, which evolved into rock ‘n roll when white musicians started playing it, the and dj Alan Freed called the white verison rock ‘n roll; which became the name that stuck. the first real R&B hit was Ike Turner’s “Rocket ‘88” which was in 1928, and the first Rock ‘n Roll number one was ‘Rock around the Clock’ by Bill Haley, this came about becuase he was the ‘cleanest’ person playing this kind of music that could be targeted at a mass market, i.e he was white.
English Rock ‘n roll such as the stones and the who, the yardbirds etc came about when a minority group of teenagers here started picking up on the records of old blues players such as leadbelly, and started playing their interpretation of it, but with electric guitars, this was also classed as rock ‘n roll, but was the start of the 60’s blues bands and the invasion of the american charts by english kids playing their interpretation of the blues. the term R&B now is just a record company label for a totally commericial style of music, and it’s worth noting that it’s not the only word which has changed meanings, for instance, ‘soul’ now is completly different to what it used to be as a music form.
just thought i’d share that with you, i have lessons in History of Popular Music and this stuff rules.

Thanks for that deekoi.
Though I still can’t even see the connection (cos surely there must be one, no matter how tentative) between the old and new R&B.

If you look at how Metal has changed over 30 years from Sabbath to Slipknow (ugh) you can see a flow of development and a connection. I really can’t see this R&B connection at all. The record labels who dreamed up this pigeonhole must be deaf or something.

It is interesting to see, that most music of today´s is based on classic rock n roll and r`n´b and of course on the black culture!

To me, R & B means stuff they play on the radio, and the stuff they play in clubs I wouldn’t go in.

I agree with you concerning nowaday´s R´n´B, but not concerning the “old skool” R´n´B!
