If you NEED to play something, it usually goes wrong.

Stagg are shit. Even if you are just starting out, don’t get those raft of shit tubs that they call drums.

Once you get the basics, you’ll regret ever getting a stagg kit. Sometimes it’s better off to go for a better known kit maker, at least then you know what you’re getting. For a beginner I’d probably go for Pearl myself, that’s what I had.

I now use a Mapex M 6 piece which sounds brilliant, but cost a lot of money, so try and stick with something cheap but not crap, just in case you decide drums aren’t for you.

I’d say head for something down that line - I didn’t and yeah did regret it. Blew the best part of my student loan on my current kit though, who needs textbooks! ;)

Have a good look round the net to get some ideas. I just found a decent sounding Mapex setup with cymbals for £300 so who knows what you might find.

yeah, my 2 fave drummer mates both use a pearl export kit and they both sound and play pretty good, and randomly the both indepednantly bought the pearl Chad Smith signature snare, tho for snares nothi compares to my mates Ludwig Brass snare, deadly sound.

Mine is a Pearl export too. It’s actually not my first kit, but it’s cheap enough to get if you’re a novice, and good enough to keep when you’re an intermediate.

Eh, I guess that makes me an intermediate! :p

I love that drum sound!! it’s one of the most raw drum sounds I’ve ever heard!

Gotta agree with you there Joe, not heard anyone else have a sound like that. Then again people have a go at Lars these days because its fashionable to do so - no thinking required when you’re just repeating the same old line time and time again, even if they don’t have the first clue about drumming. Its abit old now isn’t it? Maybe they should find something better to do their time.

Personally I’d love one of those big meaty Bell Brass Snares - I tried one abit back it was huuuuuuuge!

Can you give me a link to that site please? As I did find a Mapex VX without cymbals for £369…

There’s a whole thread dedicated to it somewhere…why?! He’s a good drummer and a genius businessman who got metallica to the very top!

My second kit was a second hand Pearl kit, I’m not actually sure of the type but it was pretty old. But yeah, Pearl is a good place to start.

Any better kits I can get for around £450?

£450 is a bit expensive for a first kit, I would say.

Cos if you don’t stick with it well that’s a lot of money.

I’d like to find one on the ‘net, because it’s my dad that’s buying it and he doesn’t know music. :)

Have you checked E-bay?I’m not sure what kits they have in the UK as far as starter kits go but you can’t go wrong with Pearl,Pacific,Mapex(shudder),Sonor and Tama. They all should have decent hardware as well(1 to 2 cymbal stands, hihat stand, snare stand and kick pedal).Zildjian,Paiste,Stagg,Sabian,Meinel, etc all make great lower line cymbals as well. They also have box sets usually a 16”crash,14”hats and a 20” ride that’s pretty reasonable.

And like SoJ said, a cymbal pack should do you for learning - no need to go overboard on them, yet ;)

One way of checking out whether it is worth investing in a halfway decent kit is to get yourself down to a well-equipped rehearsal studio place and hire a room out for an hour or two. You should be able to hire some cymbals for a couple of extra quid and then have a bash with someone who can show you the basics..

Not the cheapest thing in the world (£10+ per hour) but if you talk nicely to them and explain it is you on your own and go at an unpopular time (any time during the early afternoon, usually) they may do you a discount.

At least that way you can have a go on a standard kind of kit (if the studio is any good and has good gear!) and see what kind of natural affinity you have for the instrument.

Got a Performance Percussion 5 piece kit!
Suprised actually, for a £169 kit, it sounds pretty fuckin good.
Got hi-hats and a crash/ride with it too.
Using brushes at the moment, to keep the neighbours happy.

I started playing drum with and old Tama Swingstar model and 4 different brands of cymbals, hahaha, anyway the drum showed a good sound and pretty good quality.
Then i bought an almost pro Mapex drum with Sabian Cymbals.
I recomend Mapex and Tama Drum, Sabian and Paiste cymbals.

Tryin to play Screamager, doesn’t sound the best with brushes (or is it my drumming  ), but I think it’s a bit hard to play with just a hi hat and a crash/ride!

Spare cymbals?

Anyone?

If you want to play in your room the best option is buying a Yamaha (Electronic of course), with some good headphones. Unfortunately those drums are pretty expensive, not for me, maybe someday.
