Favourite Directors?

#

Started by Misanthropologist (d)

Anyone have any opinions on their favourites? Just been watching my way through Michel Gondry’s music videos on Youtube, and the guy is a genius.

Not sure who I prefer for full length films, though. David Fincher springs to mind.

I’ve never heard of him. Can you describe what you like about his stuff?

As you might know he’s Finnish and has made quite a few films in his career. “Drifting clouds”, “I hired a contract killer” are among the best known. His characters usually don’t speak, or as little as possible, rather Finnish so to speak. He portraits Finland as a bit of a rough place which it isn’t, but the Tourist Board aren’t too happy with his way of portraying the place.

Not very useful, I know, but give it a go! You might like his style. I do, and I wish the world would actually be like his movies…

Edited to say: “bleak” might be a word to describe his work

Sounds interesting. I checked his name on iMDB, but I didn’t recognise any of his stuff. I don’t know if I’ll actually get the chance to check any of it out (unless it comes up on ebay), but I’ll try and remember the name.

There are a few DVDs on amazon.co.uk available.

Some of his actors (he works with the same cast mostly all the time) appeared on Jarmush’s “Night on Earth” (The Helsinki sequence). His “Leningrad Cowboys” series was a rather big success a few years back. Hilarious if ye like black humour.

Cool, I’ll look out for it.

I’ve saved Leningrad Cowboys and I Hired A Contract Killer in my searches so if anything comes up cheap, I’ll get them.

Kubrick is one of the most over rated directors of all time.

OF ALL TIME! One of the MOST over-rated. So, on the list of over-rated directors, he rates highly? The question is, does he deserve to be rated highly as one of the most over-rated directors of all time? If he does, then he’s not over-rated. He would in fact be rated exactly right as an over-rated director. Which would mean that he couldn’t be rated rightly as an overrated director. So you’re wrong either way. Possibly. ;)

He did a pretty good job on that one, whether over-rated, under-rated, or precicely-rated.

Squall thinks Kubrick’s crap, eh?

If he didn’t, I’d be suspicious and think I’d misjuded one of them.
