One of the most exciting genre’s out there? Anyone who has heard Wolf Eyes will probably agree/ disagree (if you don’t understand it).

i guess you mean the same as me.. noise rock! - ahhhhh… damn, i really listen to a lot of noise rock bands… but also some chaotic ones with electronic samples/elements. still, all in all my favourite bands are mainly all from that genre!

-distorted bass lines
-shrill guitars
-heavy drum patterns
-screaming/rant vocals (sometimes very distored as well)
-and very sarcastic lyrics

that’s what are good noise rock band is made of.

-and as i said, sometimes some electronic elements, if they fit good into the songs

What like the Japanese noise stuff… or some the projects mike patton has done? Lots of static and strange samples… no regular structure.

If so, then no, it’s not the most exciting genre out there… it’s sort of like some modern art. There is a fine line between calling it interesting and inventive or just plain arse… most of the time it goes into the latter of the two.

I do have some noise stuff and i have got into it, and enjoy hearing stuff which is a bit different and not so standard… i prefer it over most chart stuff any day… but i do have my limits.

i once heard a lot of melt banana stuff.. and this is really not my cup of tea!

you really have to find good ones, and they… yes… they are very hard to find. i can tell you stories…

the no regular structur thing, is great. cause mostly you expect that this or that part comes now again and then it turns out to be totally different.

See i don’t mind some melt banana stuff… they do have a bit of order to there music. I have also checked out wolf eyes and i don’t personaly rate them.

I have no problems with the no structure thing, as i do like things to go places that you wouldn’t expect its just when people get all elitist and beard stroking over it.

Some bands make noise for the sake of it, but others really know what they’re doing. With Wolf Eyes, although it’s not instant, listen to it a few more times and you can hear the new things every time. It’s amazing, but I can understand why people dislike it.

melt bananas latest record was ok, but the other stuff: “songs” with a lenght of about 5 - 20 seconds.. nah, i dont like this. it was kind of funny first, but then…

never heard wolf eyes, but if i think about noise rock.. then i have several names in my head: mclusky, kill kenada, martini henry rifles, shellac… and many more, but actually mostly they arent pure noise rock bands. this is good cause, otherwise it would get boring very soon. but my fav. bands have a lot things in their music that are also used or that sound familiar to that genre.
but in most cases i describe them with noise, cause i like the sound of it… and to a certain degree its true.. aaaaand you mostly you can never never describe a band with just one genre, as they reach out to about a bunch different genres. therapy?’s first records weren’t even pure noise rock songs!

May I suggest everyone checks out Eluvium. It’s ambience with noise thrown in the mix as well, and it’s very powerful.

Wolf Eyes, Errase Errata, Liars, Lightning Bolt, Sunn O))), Deerhoof, The Locust… yeah I think that noise rock is the best thing out there at the mo. Plus the fact the movement’s been influenced by old favs like the Mary Chain, MBV, Sonic Youth and Spacemen 3 just cements its great-ness :)

their debut is brilliant as well as some ep’s that followed… but the rest is totally shite, album#2 and #3 is just horrible!

Drum’s Not Dead is the best album of 2006 by a mile. I had to try really hard not to write that in capitals. It was tough. And “They Were Wrong” is fucking incredible.

Liars are absolutely amazing live as well. They’re the best band out there at the mo doing things that no-one else is. They’re great-ness!

Just started getting into Nurse With Wound because of them - they make Liars sound like S Club 7

Ah, Nurse With Wound… industrial is where it’s at. I recommend the albums Nature Unveiled and Dogs Blood Rising by Current 93 if you like NWW. And of course Throbbing Gristle.
Noise rock I often find a bit… I dunno, half-arsed? Proper noise though I do enjoy… Merzbow, Government Alpha and such. Fun. And some of Pan Sonic’s stuff is pretty fucking intense.

Half the stuff in this thread isn’t noise at all… SunnO))) are doom metal, MBV are fucking shoegaze

Yeah, I’ve got some tracks Current 93 did with Nurse With Wound, sounds good. Psychic TV as well. I think MBV influenced a lot of noise rock rather than being noise rock themselves (although I have a few live recordings of theirs that say otherwise!) I’d call Sunn O))) sludge or something but they always seem to get lumped in too - will be seeing them live in October, cannae wait :)

C93 randomly turned folk about 1988, I fucking love their later stuff, but always found the industrial -> folk change pretty fucking bizarre.

Hello! (again)
Merzbow are pretty great, as are Birds Of Delay.
I’m guessing most have heard Lou Reed’s ‘Metal Machine Music’. That’s an intense listen. Pretty tame by todays standards, but a push in the right direction for noise music.

A few months into my discovery of noise though, I find when noise is integrated into more - lets say - conventional structures, it’s alot more enjoyable. You can hear it in everyone from The Velvet Underground even to avant-folk acts like Animal Collective.

Nice.

I’d recommend An Albatross. Saw them live last year and they totally blew me away. Think kind of electronic pop sounds mixed with heavy metal guitar and fronted by a hippie singer with screamy vocals. They seem at their best live though.

30 Seconds mentioned Animal Collective, their member Panda Bear’s solo album is amazing, will probably be my favourite of 2007. Ariel Pink as good as well, a lot like Panda Bear but more ‘noise’!

Another favourite of mine is early Laibach. Especially their live “Ljubljana-Zagreb-Beograd” album. It’s really, really noisy, people have been known to cover their ears and flee the scene whenever I put on the CD… :D

The Panda Bear album is lovely; aural bliss. ‘Bros’ is perfection. It’s like The Beach Boys crossed with Animal Collective!

On a side note: the ‘People Ep’ is great. I hope they can better ‘Feels’ with the new album…

An Albatross are ace-o.
I don’t know if anyone’s heard any of John Cale’s early recordings. They delved into noise a fair bit.
