Which period of time was best for metal?

Yep, here comes yet another poll.

During which time period was the metal genre at its best, in your opinion?

I’ll discount the early years with Sabbath, Zeppelin and Deep Purple and start roughly with the NWOBHM.

(Before changing the message boards’ software in August 2007 this discussion contained a poll, which may return in the future)

I’m guessing most people will be looking back through rose-tinted glasses and voting for the period when they first got into metal - so for me that would be 91 - 94 and the many classic releases from that time (e.g. from Pantera, Sepultura, Paradise Lost, AIC, Nirvana etc. etc.)

I would agree with sam and say 91-94 a lot of influential stuff came out around then and it was before Nu metal turned the whole genre a bit shit for a while. GnR wasn’t a joke, Metallica weren’t crap Pantera,Seps and black metal bands were breaking through. Also some small band called Therapy? unleashed themselves on the world:D

well yes Master of Puppets was one of the best metal albums to come out of that period… but for a wider look at things there was an aweful lot of shit hair metal and cock rock bands. In my opinion the thrash bands and GNR are one of the few credible things to arise from the 80’s( but i could be wrong and have forgotten someone important)..i would say the american punk scene being one of the good things but they ain’t metal so doubt count in this instance.

Well, I guess you could count Suicidal Tendencies as metal.

Gotta go 86-87..that’s when thrash/speed metal exploded.

Peace Sells
Reign In Blood
Master of Puppets (was out late 85 but really took off in 86),
Among the Living

Those are four of the strongest Metal albums ever
Add to that

Taking Over from Over Kill
The Legacy from Testament
The Dark from Metal Church

pretty strong couple of years.

Well, now we got Mastodon, Tool, In Flames, Coheed And Cambria… those bands make the most inventive metal we heard in a looong time.

Funny how a lot of bands that really struggled during the 90’s are back on a commercial high - I mean look at iron Maiden. At one point they couldn’t get arrested, Bruce had left and they were limping on with a dwindling audience. Now they have just released an album that is getting rave reviews and they are selling out gigs everywhere and getting a shitload of coverage.

GREAT poll! :) I’ve gone for ‘88-‘90 if we’re talking old skool metal like metallica and anthrax and the like. A particular fave of that era is the much overlooked “lights camera revolution” by suicidal tendencies. Lost its way a bit after that i think, and picked back up in the 00’s.

For me,It would be 1991-1994,maybe because I began to be really interested in heavy metal stuff in that period of time (Pantera,Machine Head,Sepultura…)

I’d say 91-94 as well. 91 saw my first ever Donnington Monsters of Rock with AC-DC headlining. A great day out with some great memories. Also went in 92 when Maiden headlined and was there in 94 when T? shared a stage with Pantera and Sepultura which was also the year when Biohazard got unplugged on the new second stage after it got invaded.

91-94 even tho alot of my fave bands were al little after that, my real faves were doing thier best stuff then or building up to it, plus up to 91-94 includes Prong - Clenasing, Helmet - Meantime & Betty and Faith No More - Angel Dust and if were being reall picky then the very start of Nu-metal, i.e first Korn album, follwed in 95 by Deftones- adrenaline

just love the 90’s metal until the end wher eit turned really shit.
