I have:
-teenager of the year
-fb & catholics - debut
-fb & catholics - pistolero
-fb & catholics - dog in the sand
-plus a few mp3’s (including a free internet album called “oddballs”, i believe.. i havent heard it yet. i just know they had a few songs that they recorded and then they decided not to release it officialy, cause they have better stuff to offer.)

i recently really got into “dog in the sand”. songs like “stupid me”, “the swimmer”, “bullet” or “i’ll be blue” really grew on me and i think they are just perfect. i somehow like this “blues-frank” a bit more like the rockin’ frank.. dont know why, maybe it’s just a phase, but i guess it’s the beginning of a new experience. actually i like fb solo/cathlics stuff more than pixies records. is that weird? i dont know. but you know, fb’s music isn’t as perfect composed as pixies stuff. he actually records pretty quick, he doesnt care about perfection, i somehow think he is just writing, playing, recording.. pretty fast. his music is , more or less, about charme. once you feel the charme of him and his music you really understand what he is doing. that’s how i feel about it.

anyway, from what i read i thought “fast man raider man” should be similiar. you know, all this country-folk-blues stuff. but it’s different, although it is the same genre somehow. i mean it’s good, but i guess its just so different because of the various new musicians with whom he recorded it. steve cropper (guitarist from the blues brothers) played guitar on this album, which is pretty cool! if he would have made it with the catholics it would probably have been like “dog in the sand”. but it’s interessting you also hear some trumpets, which remind me about “tennager of the year”. strange mixture, but it works! personally, i think he could sang it better… on the “dog in the sand” recorded he obviously was really into it, he felt something when he sang those songs.. but maybe it was his intention to sing it in a different way on the new record.

but i have just heard cd1 one yet, so this is just a first impression of my thoughts… don’t get me wrong, it is really good, very straight forwad, but at the moment i feel like i miss this “special-whatever-it-is” on some songs. i probably need more time for it, it was the same with “dog in the sand”.

which records do you have?

i LOVE frank black!! :D

I have teenager of the year, cult of ray, erm…dog in the sand, and honeycomb.

I got honeycomb first and really got into that. I then bought Teenager and Cult, but listened to each one only once before ignoring them for the best part of a year. Then a few months back i dug teenager out again and really perserverd with it. What at first seemed impenetrable is actually a VERY rewarding album, i’m absolutely in love with it. Once i’d cracked that i soon got into Cult of Ray, another fantastic album. I haven’t listened to dog in the sand yet, i only got it a few weeks back.

I just find with Frank that he’s got such a unique style that you have to dig hard to understand it, but once you do its a hell of an experience. I think its incredible that in this day and age someone of franks stature can be so prolific AND stay at the top of his game. I just wish he’d get his ass over to britain for a tour!

Have you listened to any of the podcasts on his website?

i think he is a really amazing musician.. and i am not talking about pixies.

i am afraid no, no podcast, not yet. what’s on there?

you know, actually it’s pretty hard to hear all the albums, because he is so fast in producing!

honeycomb is the best record since years, thats what i read on some websites… the new one includes some recordings from the honeycomb session. i was actually had to choose between those 2, but then decided for the new one, because its a 2cd set :D

What i liked about the catholics was that they learnt the songs perfectly and then booked a studio or a room for one day and then played and mixed all the albums live to two track and that was it done no overdubs… I respect that alot, none of this three years in a studio touching up each note and sound.

me too..
and this means also that it is pretty rough, thats something i really appreciate. i love nothing more that rough recordings, of course there are some others with many studio-mixing stuff.. but i prefer rough stuff!

The podcasts are broadcast every 2 weeks, and are essentially a 30-40 minute showcase of frank. You usually get a couple of live tracks, an obscure one, overlooked album tracks, covers of franks songs by other folk, and sometimes an interview. Good listening. :)

@Divers: Absolutely. For some reason Metallica spring to mind…:D I haven’t listened to the catholics yet, i aint got round to playing it yet. But i will. :)
