Frank Black Francis

#

Started by allroy

Record of the year from the former teenager of the year. It beats everything else I’ve heard so far, including N.A.N.E., Seclusion by Aereogramme, Mark Lanegan, Twilight singers, Dresden Dolls, Thermals etc.
Cd1 with old demos (pre-Come On Pilgrim) are great, but CD2 is so fuckin’ amazing: new recordings of Pixies songs together with the Two Pale Boys (David Thomas’ (remember Pere Ubu or at least Final Solution, their only ‘hit’) backing band), i.e. no drums, nearly no bass, just guitar, loads of electronica and bits of trumpet and violin.
It reminds me sometimes of Kaizers Orchestra, Bowie’s Low or The Notwist. And Velvet Underground as well, especially Planet Of Sound, the 15 minute long finale, very Waiting For My Man-like.
Oh boy, what a brilliant album.

Not very filling but worth it, might have to just wonder round supermarkets and shops finding free samples of food!
I have also heard that Frank Black will have a new double solo album out in march which should be good.

Honeycomb by Frank Black is out soon and so far they reviews aren’t that good. I’m not someone who really believe reviewers so was wondering if anyone has heardanything from it yet. I know it has a more country feel to it than other solo stuff.

Just listened to it once and I’m a bit disappointed so far.

Esp. Dark End Of the Street is disapointing though that may be due to that brilliant version by The Afghan Whigs.

same here, really not sure they should. But hey, bands are always destroying their legacies! I thought trompe le monde was their best, so its not even as if they’re having to cover up a bad exit.

This is one reason why Weller always says he won’t reform the Jam, cos of the idea of preserving the legacy…and whether you like Weller/ the Jam or not, I have to say it is an admirable standpoint to take, especially considering the money on offer…

BUT there are bands who feel like they have unfinished business (like when the Bunnymen got back together, for example) who feel like their legacy hasn’t quite been finished off yet..maybe those little wee Pixies feel that way?

does anyone have em? the acoustic one should be interessting!

i don’t know about a new pixies album. trompe was really great. but i think we dont have to worry too much about it. even frank said, they didnt start recording yet, because the song weren’t just as good as regular pixies stuff!

oh i can understand it totally, if its something you’ve created then why not pick it up again? Just to preserve the “perfect history” us fans and critics like? Nah, fuck that, they should do it if they want. For me Pixies were the one band i always really wanted to reform, having been ignorant to them in their heyday.

I saw the reunion gigs in London and they were fantastic…i went shit mental when Planet of sound came on as it’s still my favourite. I have the reunion DVD on my crimbo list but the two new ones i don’t know about…i think they are a bit of a record company rush job…the acoustic one is the only tempting one of the two.

its my favorite too!!! *tries tocalm himself down* ahem..as you were…

I’ve just read back over this thread, did you get Honeycomb in the end mate? Predictably enough i love it! :D

@Gapu: Huffer is fucking brilliant, you’re right! Kim Deal has a knack of writing songs SO straight forward you wonder why no-one tohught of it before!

i was thinking about that too.. it seems just like a money-making thing, that sucks! i mean, we already have enough pixies-reunion stuff.. i’d prefer concerts from 1991 from the last tour before the split.
but the acoustic one seems to be interessting, i also read theres one of the very very first pixies concerts on it.

there’s one thing i want to ask about kim deal. is it true that she first didnt want to make another pixies album? i guess now she wants it too, cause we would have heard it somewhere

i love the “pixies dvd” they released a couple of years back. Well, i did until i noticed franks boobs wobbling as he plays, now i’m too scared to look!

@Gapu: From what i’ve read yeah, she didn’t wanna do it. But honestly i think they were all a bit sceptical about it and wanted to find their feet again first.

Planet of sound is a song i would love to cover but wont as it will never be as good.
Yes I did get it, i don’t mind it…it’s just not my favourite by him. The duet with his wife is the best track on there i felt. Did you get the Francis album..i really like the weird versions of the pixies songs.

As far as the Breeders i only really like the last one..i get bored part way through the first two.

“planet of sound” on frank black francis is just awesome. Its like a mantra or something. I love the demo disc, “right frank, record what you’ve got on here, i’ll just stick the kettle on”! I think at the very best you’d expect one good song and a load of dodgy numbers, i don’t think you’d expect so many great songs from such a young artist.

ok along with tame and other ones, but planet of sound was the most fascinating one i’d say

@taunty dan: the boobs where the first thing i realised when i was watching it for the first time.. haha, but i still can watch it, i dont focuse too hard on them… ;)

Frank has another new album out soon… little workaholic bastard.. haven’t even got his last album yet.

“Pixies frontman Frank Black is set to release a Christmas album later this month.

‘Christmass’, out on December 18, is comprised of live acoustic recordings from Summer 2006, along with five tracks recorded partly in hotel rooms and partly at Planet of Sound Studios in Hartford, Connecticut.

There is also a DVD with selections from one of the live acoustic shows. The package is currently only available as a mail order release from Cookingvinylrecordstore.co.uk.”
