actually, while we’re on the subject of grammar, whats the correct use of ’ when making a word ploural? I thought it was in place of a letter, eg “Dan’s ace, int he?” but then you get it used as “dan’s house” as well. Whats right?

Ah! I found it!
They’re both right. If you miss out a letter you use an apostrophe, as in don’t, won’t etc - but it is also used to indicate ownership of something, so if something belongs to Colin then it’s Colin’s.
The only time this isn’t true is with the word its. You only ever use an apostrophe in it’s if you mean it is.
Couldn’t be simpler :)
And you mean ‘plural’ not ‘ploural’ - or is that another one of your bizarre spelling habits? :D
Edit - and you never ever use an apostrophe when you’re making a plural - you just stick an S on the end.
And if you’re doing the belonging thingy and the word ends in an s, then you don’t use the second s.
So you could say - I found this dog but I don’t know if it’s Dan’s or Dennis’
Hope that helps.

but what if theres a pub called colins, is it Colins or Colin’s?
EDIT: No, ploural was just a typo! :p

It depends if it means a name or not. You’d say Colin’s if it was named after somebody called Colin - but if their surname was Colins (for example) then it would be Colins’ :D
If it was the Rovers Return you probably would assume that there was more than one rover so you wouldn’t put an apostrophe in.
If you’re ever not sure then ask Dennis - he loves it when people do it wrong :)
