I love the bassline to Starlight by Muse - coupled with the piano hook, I’m amazed it wasn’t the biggest hit of the Autumn and didn’t catapult Muse to Coldplay-esque proportions of popularity.

Probably for the best though eh?

Ah, NON-T? bassriffs…

I’d say anything by Primus, but that’s just the sweaty little bass-playing Les Claypool fanboy inside me talking.

Hysteria by Muse is an unbelievable bass riff - I have tried playing htis myself and to do so at that speed constantly throughout the song with no mistakes is a good million light years away from my level of bass playing, so how on earth their guy does it every night on tour is beyond me. Hats off to the chap!

Ooh, I’m trying to get up to speed on that myself. I’m still about 8BPM away from getting it right. :(

Yeah, any ‘best bass riff’ questions have to exclude Primus, or else (by rights), that’s all there’d be. Bet he could play Hysteria, slapping every note, at twice that speed. Hmm… that sounds like a larf, actually.

Then he’d probably just sound like Victor Wooten. You wouldn’t want that, now would you?

Meh… not Les, but I’d love almost everybody else to sound like Wooten. It’d make Coldplay bearable, at least.

The Fez by Steely Dan - ok, ok bad song but the bassline is slinky yet complicated.

Also reach Out I’ll be There by The Four tops… AMAZING! groovy and fun with a few twists to make it difficult!

ooh ooh ooh while we’re here… 4 Horsemen by Metallica, who can play that fingerstyle?!

the verse part to hyper music by Muse, thats great.

ps on the subject of muse…does anyone know how Chris played Stockholm syndrome? He says he’s exclusively a finger player but i swear i saw some footage of him somewhere playing it with a pick… if he did play it on the album fingerstyle then i’m totally jealous and off to practice those 16ths!

So far as I know he doesn’t use picks, but I suppose he could have. *shrugs*

Yes, Hypermusic has some excellent bass!

at one minute thirty there’s a whopping great close-up of him fingerpicking. :)

EDIT: BUT at about 3.44 he seems to be strumming… Hmm. Can’t actually see a pick, but it’s a definite strumming action.

Looks to me like he starts off with fingerstyle, gets knackered at the end of the 1st verse, carries on with a pick and then finishes with fingers again!
I don’t feel so bad now that i can’t quite do it either!

After that I did find another video where he is quite definitely playing it fingerstyle all the way through. :(
I don’t think he’s actually using a pick, I think he’s just strumming using his fingers. Still cheating though! :D

I thought he changed how he plays songs constantly (on Johnathan Ross he played the intro/verse of Time is Running Out on a keyboard). I geuss he started off using fingers because there’s some tapping at the start of Stockholm, I believe?

I’ve not actually tried playing it yet, but the beginning is just made up of those huge octave slides down the neck, isn’t it?

I know TIRO is actually played with a synthesizer on the album, and that live he alternates playing it with keyboard or bass. His pedalboard actually has ‘keyboard’ built into it (but big enough to play with his feet). I’d like to see him try Hysteria with that, though! :D

OK you’re all going to think this is sad but i went to a panto last night and the bassist there was AMAZING! right on cue he was playing all kinds of short segments of music, playing loads of different styles and feels in one song! It was genius, AND he was using effects. i might even go and see it again just for him!

He’s behind you! etc
