We sould also consider “Frontmen who change bands”
SO for instance Axl Rose or Ginger
do you think it’s a genetic thing? What with the ginger hair and all?

I’m thinking about Voivod here. I got into metal through Voivod’s Negatron album (without Snake). Probably that’s sacrilege to eighties metal fans, but I can’t help it. It does contain a couple of really good numbers. Now that I know, respect and love much of their older stuff as well, I can’t help it but like most of fairly equally it upto Phobos (second disc without Snake, and really cool spacey proggy thrash metal).
Recently Snake rejoined the band and honestly, their latest stuff doesn’t make me feel warm or cold. Pretty soulles I might even say.
The story ends sadly because over a year ago the guitarplayer died and we can’t replace Piggy can we?
Anyway interesting thread.
Other people like Voivod?
PS Napalm death have NO-ONE left of the original line-up…

For me; its the frontman that defines the band (and being a bassist, thats annoying!) and bands returning with a new singer is pretty dumb I think!
Totally agree with you buffalo-boy. When Blaze was with Madien fecking shite also when Max left Sepultura.Dont get wrong Dereck Green who replaced Max excellant lead man however not the same without Max. Now that Igor has left I think Andreas and Paulo wouldnt be far be behind him. Sepultura reunion will follow soon I hope!! :)

Well it hasn’t exactly worked now has it… I saw them with Bush on a sold out tour, the reunion tour didn’t sell out and I saw them at the same venue i saw them with Bush at and it was only 3/4 full.
The last Anthrax album did really well and boosted their profile loads they should have carried on the momentum.
I don’t know what it’s like overseas, but here in the U.S. Anthrax had pretty much been reduced to an irrelevant has-been type band to most people which is unfortunate since I, like most of you, agree that they were much better with Bush than they ever were with Belladonna. But their sales after Sound of White Noise were consistently stagnant and their shows weren’t drawing hardly anything in terms of attendence. But the reunion show here with Belladonna was packed.
Unfortunately, more people would rather them be a cheesy nostalgia act than a band actually capable of moving forward and still doing something new.
As for everything else mentioned here, that sucks that Dave Wyndorf left Monster Magnet. I hadn’t heard about that. They’re done then.
Skid Row would be exactly the same even if Sebastian Bach came back. They’re an outdated nostalgia act. They’re fun for what they are, but even the most popular member of the band coming back wouldn’t do much to rejuvinate their popularity in terms of actual relevance.
I’m one of the only people who actually seems to like the Blaze Bayley era Iron Maiden stuff. It’s definitely not as good as Bruce, but it’s way better than the shit they did with Paul DiAnno. I don’t care what anybody says, those first two albums are so fucking overrated.
All things considered, it depends on the band and the singer as to whether or not replacing them will actually make a significant difference. Killswitch Engage took a HUGE gamble when they changed singers right on the cusp of breaking into the mainstream. That’s probably the most crucial point in a band’s career, and they changed singers. That sounds like suicide, but they made it work. I like Howard a lot better than Jesse. And their record sales certainly haven’t suffered.
More often than not, it’s hard to get away with changing your vocalist, but there are a solid amount of bands that can get away with it.

i thought the X Factor by Maiden was an interesting curveball, not too bad an album but he quickly became laughable..there was no way Maiden were ever goinna survive as a dark, brooding kind of band with their camp gallopy rhythms.
Agree about Skid Row, they were good at the time but would stand no chance now unless it was as a cabaret act!

Matt Sorum is a pretty shitty drummer, it has to be said. On all the slower GnR songs he plays the same boring fill, over and over. And he looks like a tit, with or without the big curly hair.
Looking back at it, Blaze-era Maiden was fucking shameful! I defended it staunchly at the time, as I was (still am) a huge Maiden fan and he was very charismatic, yet it’s bad enough having someone who can barely hits the notes when you start off, but following Bruce Dickinson, for god’s sake, that’s just ridiculous!
Anathema have been better in their later incarnations than the old Darren White days, imho.

Fleetwoord mac had a revolving door policy in their band :D
Had like 12 seperate line ups !!!
Its hard to think of bands that have NEVER changed members.
U2 are one. ( im not counting when Edges brother plyaed with them before they were signed - i mean signed onwards )
Blur was another up until Graham got sacked - but he wasnt replaced.

and a second guitarist (despite Wire once claiming “no Pat Smears in THIS band!”) and they had a guitarist called Flicker before they got going seriously. But he doesn’t really count I guess.

I think it depends on the band as well. Anthrax got better with John Bush as well, tho they’ve been touring again lately with Joey Belladonna.
Don’t forget though… Joey was their second singer. Thier first album with Neil Turbin…ugh!
Personally I like Joey, because that’s what I grew up with, and the footage from a reunion show with the “Classic” line-up sounded great.
Sort of apples and oranges really, they were more hardcore/speed/thrashy with Joey, and more grungy-down-tuned with John, completely different band.
Matter of taste I guess. Nothing against either, for me it depends on what I’m in the mood for.

Well, they’ve had a fifth member since the 3rd album (played as a guest on the 2nd).
Rage Against The Machine? Pantera? (not the early spandex days, of course!) You could say Queen, I suppose, as technically it’s now Queen & Paul Rodgers. Shameful.
