PC music

Right dudes…need some help here

I want to get a laptop to record music onto…only thing is there’s a mindfuck of stuff to choose from.
Can anyone tell me what requirements (+ Soundcard/speakers etc) on a laptop i will need and a good software prog to get? I want to record from a guitar/bass/mic/drum machine straight onto multitrack software where i can edit and mix it ready to turn into mp3 or burn it to CD? Will i need a jack/usb converter or can i plug an instrument straight into the soundcard somehow?

Cheers for any info :)

Software: Steinberg Cubase

It’s one of the best ( and most complicated :p ) programs for recording stuff!

well i don’t pretend to be an expert on such matters but i use a sonar Cakewalk programme called “guitar Tracks II” which is pretty basic but suits my needs (i have a really crap old pc with a crap old windows package) but they do really great packages for pretty much whatever you need. Check out the sonar website mate. :)

EDIT: Oh, and its a simple case of plugging directly into your pc and using the Sonar effects. I think! :D

You could buy an Mbox for a couple of hundred… you won’t need anything else. The mbox Plugs into your usb port and has all the inputs for mics, drum machines etc you need, and pro Tools is very easy to use and comes with some good plug ins for compressing and E.Qing your stuff. The midi is okay if you want to use it with anything like that. You can do some very professional recordings on it, I’ve recorded alot of stuff (not drums.. need more inputs for that) that have ended up on albums on my laptop.. i do all my stuff on my mac and I personally think the sound quality is good.

MAC if you can afford it would be the most stable - studios usually have MAC G4’s or MAC Pro (Intel Core), so you could look for a MAC Book, but this is likely to be expensive.

If your doing audio processing you need a PC with a big HDD (fast access time < 8ms) and probably about a Gig of RAM min.

Ziggy is right Software: Steinberg Cubase but to be sure for a rough ball park you could goto their website and see what the softwares minimum specifications are interrms of PC power.

To be honest mate I have never used them… i’ve been a pro tools engineer now since 98 so guess i’m stuck in my ways. Logic and cubase don’t fit my needs and PT is the norm in studios so I stick to that… the only other thing i know well are SSL desks with 2inch reel to reels attached… but you don’t see many these days.

Check out “Kristal”, I think it is freeware and you have about 16 tracks and you can use VST effect. You need atleast one mic-in jack to record something. It is not that profesional tool at all, but I think it is good enough to make a start ! And I guess it is much easier to handle then Cubase.

You can find it here:
