It does depend what you were expecting in the first place… it was never going to sound as produced as those albums as it wasn’t as controlled an enviroment also budget would have been a big factor. Personally I prefer the sound of this recording over Scopophonbia as it does sound live and rawer which they do when you see them… Scopophonbia main problem for me was that it was over produced and the live aspect sucked out of it, by way too much use of compression and other studio effects.. it sounds good in one way but the life of the performance is lost alot more. For a live concert I can’t see a major problem with the drum mix..if they cheated and used tiggers like more and more bands do then yes they would cut through a hell of a lot more… but it’s not like anything is really being lost? Neil does seem to be using a duller snare these days, which doesn’t cut through the mix so much.. i do understand this, but i guess my ears to are able to pick things out easier through years of doing what i do.
For a representation of them playing live, I’m personally happy with how it sounds. I would like the next album to go back to NANES production however;)

Having listened to the preview, they need a second guitarist for live work.
I mean, still sounds good, and I will still buy it, but it just needs thickening up in parts when Andy’s doing a higher bit, or maybe Andy could concentrate on his singing whilst he does the rhythm stuff and someone else could play the more involved parts..

Don’t hate me people, but I love Therapy? as much as all y’all, but it was lacking a bit of atmosphere… I mean you can see the difference between the energy they get from the crowd at a live gig and having a striped down version. It was cool and I respect that they wanna do something different for the fans, and hats off guys, and I guess it’s a learning curve because it’s a first. The thing I really missed was the rumbling bass, crank it up mikehell and the ride cymbal in “lonely,…” was just way too loud in the mix.
I know there was problems with the live dvd filmed in belfast but a live gig, an initmate gig with limited to whatever amount of tickets to cover the cost of producing a dvd would be class. I’d pay for my ticket and I’d buy the dvd. you just can’t beat a live Therapy? gig, they are truly the best live band around.
As I said i’m not trying to start an argument, just typing my thoughts…
Later Therapy? dudes and dudettes!

This past week has been awesome and getting the webgig has really topped it off. Listening to Moment of Clarity gave me shivers as always.. good to see it still has the same effect on me even when re-recorded :D
Hehe, great early birthday present ;)

I agree with you on this. The songs were good, but it doesn’t match Therapy? live in front of an audience. I feel it’s like watching a really good band practice.
I think maybe if they did something like this with songs we haven’t heard them do before, that might be a good idea, for example a web gig consisting exclusively of covers. Now that has potential. ‘Firewater’ did an album called “songs we should have written” a few years ago. If Therapy? picked a theme like that for their next webgig I would be really fired up about it.

I don’t think you’ll see a gig of all covers.
First they’d have to pay for the gig itself, then royalties for using the songs. Unless someone else is picking up the check this one may be financialy un-doable.
I definitely think that not of the all songs translate well in the format.
Knives should only be played with an audience, it’s flat without one… same for Teethgrinder (Potato Junkie would be one to steer clear of in the future).
But since the fans voted on the setlist I guess we should take part of the blame there.
The next one should be all Pre-Troublegum songs! They were written for a 3 piece, and don’t rely on a lot of effects or overdubs (other than a few samples here and there). Dancing with Manson showed how well they translate to the webgig format. Plus we haven’t heard many of them in years!
Some of the stuff from NANE would be good too (Rise Up especially!)

Still, I’m a very happy T? fan :)

Woah! Hold your horses, mate! I love Therapy? but this webgig doesn’t excite me at all. I bought the whole shebang because I’m a fan, but I think the performance and production are rather weak and the whole thing seems like a step into the wrong direction for me. It’s great that you all love the gig so much, but personally I can still say that I don’t like it whilst REALLY liking Therapy?

I wonder if Therapy? would think about making their live shows downloadable for a fee, as Pearl Jam have? With digital recording so cheap this could be a way to give the fans what they want, and make the band a little extra.

I think you’re pretty much on your own there. Granted it’s not quite the same as watching a live gig, but that was never what it was supposed to be. It seems to me 99% of the fans who have bought the web gig love it.
The sound production is in my view excellent, can’t be knocked and is frankly better than OCFA. The visuals on the other hand are produced in the various focus levels and strange angles on purpose. It’s all about creating feel and atmosphere. I think it’s very effective.
I also think Therapy? should be commended for moving with the times and into the digital era because this is the way the music industry is moving, especially impressive for a band of their ‘certain age’ shall we say, who could easily become stuck in their own ways. Fan participation and digitally delivered music is a big step forward, and definitely in the right direction. Big slap on the back all round!
