I don’t know if I’d say it was ill-conceived, but there definitely were a few cringe moments.
I agree Straigt Life was sub-par, but I felt it mainly suffered from the lack of a second guitar.
I thought Knives was flat without an audience (It’s one that really should only be played live, like Potato Junkie)
I thought the vocals for Lonely Crying Only could have used more life, and the melody vocal for Suing God was a bit off too.
But several songs came off well
Screamager, Nowhere and Die Laughing were strong
so was Evil Elvis…and Dancin with Manson was excellent.
I also thought the sound quality and the mix were excellent.
It was their first go at this, so I’m cutting them more slack.
Overall I think it came of well, with room for improvement. I’d grade it a B- for Suing God and my points below.
But here’s my two cents of constructive criticism.
1) Try using a mic on the guitar cabs instead of recording through the soundboard… this was a big contributor to some of the flat sounds. IMO micing the cabs gives you a more live sound. It lets the tone of the amp and guitar come through better, as well as you get better reverb that way.
2) Limit the potential setlists to songs which aren’t negatively impacted by having only one guitar. Straight Life suffered, but Suing God and Lonely Crying Only translated fine with one guitar
3) If playing something obscure, make sure it’s really tight before you record. I had the sense that Andy wasn’t completely comfortable with the vocals on Suing God, the words were there but it sounded more like a first run demo.
That being said, I’d look forward to another one of these. Especially with more Pre-Troublegum, and Post-HA songs.
Of course a concert recording would be nice too.
