Agreed.
I remember an article in a guitar magazine from back when the black album came out. James was talking about how quiet the bass ahd been in previous albums and said something to the effect that when they first played the ‘new’ album to their mates, they were asking ‘what’s that weird rumbling sort of sound underneath the guitars?’ ‘Dude, that’s the bass!’ :D

I think a lot of bands, metal bands in particular, fall into that trap. For example, anyone know if Tom Araya is a good bassist? No idea meself, can’t hear a note of what he plays!
Bass can do so much more than just root notes. OK not everyone is an Ozzy fan, but a good example is No More Tears - great bass intro, something different from the run of the mill plodding of some bassists (Def Leppard hang your heads in shame. Again.)
What aboout ” Perry Mason ” ? wasn’t that the man himself, Robert Trujillo ?

Why I think the new album will be good.
1.Rick Rubin producing.
2.They’ve been writing it since summer 2003 - not ” go in the studio - press record and start playing ”
3.They’re picking the best ideas out of over 50 cd’s worth of riffs and jams and making songs out of them.
4.They’re spending the first few days of recording getting each instrument to sounds as good as possible - rather than spend 5 minutes placing mikes wherever.
5.They realise St Anger was a mistake and have said themselves that they ” want to make the new album as good as it can be,” and not rush it.
It may still suck, but I’m feeling positive.
Why i think the new album will be bad:
1. Rick Rubin is producing it.
2. They’ve been writing it for 4 years.
3. They’ve made one good song since the black album, SIXTEEN YEARS AGO PEOPLE!
4. They’re allowed Kirk to talk about it.

Hmm. I think you could have a point there. Rubin suddenly seems to be the producer of the moment, again for some inexplicable reason, other than he produced some classic albums about 400 years ago.

They overthink things, don’t they? “oo no, can’t use that riff, it sounds too much like Metallica” COURSE IT FUCKIN DOES CRETINS!

By my reckoning it is at least three, but I get your point.

Holy shit, things REALLY are bad on Planet Metallica, aren’t they?!

It is actually Geezer Butler who plays bass on that album, would you Adam and Eve it?

We could have another Chinese Democracy in the making…
Another 25 “escape from the Studio”, “the studio sucks” or “30 year anniversary Black album” tours to come…

Of course you can. But you have to be very very good and some just aren’t!

I agree - if you were to round up the most talented musicians in the world an lump them into one band, the end result would be shite in my opinion (there have even been attempts so I believe).
A band can usually only take 1 or 2 super talents and the rest of the band have to keep it together.
Besides Rob, there aren’t really any supertalents in Metallica at the moment…

To be honest, at this point in time I have no intention of ever seeing them live again. It’s not that I don’t like them, it’s just I’ve seen them too many times and after download apart from them playing all of MOP the rest of the set was just same old, same old and didn’t excite me. I also think that apart from the shit songs from the nineties period i have heard all their tracks in a live setting now.

Know what you mean about the live tunes. Its always the same set:
Ecstasy of Gold
Master
Wherever I may roam
Creeping death
well, you know the rest. I would like to hear Dyers Eve in there or Through The Never, just so they mix it up a bit. Ive seen them 4 times now and 3 of those have been virtually the same set list!

Yes the do end up playing alot of the same stuff… i can quite happily never hear anything off the black album ever again. Dyers Eve was great when I heard it live just spoilt by the fact that Lars couldn’t really play it… because I could have sworn that there was more/some double kick on the album version??

I like albums to be about 40-45mins in length and about 9-12 songs… your concentration doesn’t wain so much then and a good album will then leave you wanting more.. so you play it again. That’s one problem with CD some bands feel they have to fill the full 74 minutes of the format.
