I was badly suprised when I heard semy for a first time.
I couldnt recognise voice, Andy sounds like agg of aliens has jump on his face just that moment. It took many listens when used on that new sound.

Yes, it sounded different and it was at that time that I stopped listening to Therapy? for a good while as they had gone too commercial / poppy for my liking.

I eventually gave in and actually learned to enjoy the album about a year after it was released.

This was discussed on an earlier thread at some point, but if you were to ask me, they also lost a good few fans on Infernal Love because it was more mellow and lacking the humour of Troublegum. The record company caving in just as they released SD also didn’t do them any favours. Then we had Suicide Pact - You First, great album, but totally anti-commercial.

I liked Semi-Detached from the first listen. I think it was the 3rd T? album I bought after buying Troublegum and High Anxiety all in the space of about a week :P

Especialy when curche of noise is one of worst songs for me and it comes first on that album. But still i think that was wery brave step. All critics suspected that T? done after infernal love, and T? made them all wrong.
T? allways has monster on drums, mike is wery good bass player, andy is one of the best rythm guitar player(especialy couse he sings at same time) but maybe he could play more sole lines and also andy has bad mother fucking voice. from balads to trash allways sounds best.

i don’t consider infernal love commercial sounding in the slightest. “loose” and “stories” aside, i’d say it’s one of their least commercial sounding albums post troublegum. semi detached has much more catchy stuff on it.

am i completely misunderstanding the title of this thread?

The question should be, “Where would Therapy? be if they released a commercial album after Troublegum?”

probably better off financially, but probably would have broken up because they would have been making music they didn’t want to make.

I agree with you.
Still it is good when band lives just same as the sing aboute.

Think aboute Joe Strumer who was smoking cubanian cigars, drinking some drink just like Troter (fools and horses) and swiming in his own pool in greate fancy house up on hill and late that ewening he singed aboute poor life.

infernal love is not a commercial sounding album. they did that to get away from troublegum.

semi detached was a return to a slightly more radio friendly approach. think of the singles. church of noise and lonely cryin only are the most commercial tracks off that album. they could’ve quite easily chucked out don’t expect roses as the next single but no one was interested.

i’m sorry. this thread is really annoying me. there is obviously some kind of language barrier going on here.

They stopped going in this way to make their own music.
I prefer seeing therapy? playing in small places, for a public of fans

I don’t think Semi Detached was really that commercial at all. A few songs on it were for sure, but if you look at Straight Life, Tightrope Walker, Tramline, Safe…there is quite a jagged sound to the album, for want of a better word. The band said it sounded too commercial around the time of Suicide Pact, but almost without exception every album they’ve recorded since then has been more commercial!

To answer the quesion…I don’t think it would have mattered if T? had realised a more acceptable ablum for either IL or SD. They might have had an easier ride for a while but they still would have slid into commercial obscurity. I just think they are that kind of band.

T? were part of a scene at that time. Them and other Britrockers like Skunk Anansie, Wildhearts, Terrorblevision, 3CR, Feeder, The Almighty (all of whom have died). Doesn’t matter what record they made, i think the scene they became part of had a shelf life and it could have been worse - at least they are still going.
That said, a scene is only as good as the albums that come out of it and Semi - Detached, Endless, Nameless, Revolt etc just weren’t very good which paved the way for nu-metal to take over.

Yes I’m french. sentimental ? maybe. Of course, I love therapy? music, but I also like the therapy? guys for what they are.
they are true with their music, and with their fans.
A lot of bands would sell their soul to the devil, to be rich and famous

When you think about it, Semi-Detached is a cross between Troublegum and Infernal Love. It would’ve been to easy to make Troublegum part 2 and make a killing, but where would the passion be. Andy and the boys had a different sounding album in mind and they made it, despite being looked down on by the British music press for it.

You can’t blame them for that tho! Its not the greatest album is it? British bands got lazy and nu-metal jumped in and took over. End.
