Good Guitar Solos

#

Started by Dennis

Sorry if this subject has been tackled before, but after reading a thread about solos in Therapy? songs, it got me thinking:

What are your favourite guitar solos?

EDIT:
Off the top of my head, here are are few of mine:

Stay Beautiful - Manic Street Preachers

La Villa Strangiato - Rush (*BEEP BEEP ANORAK ALERT*)

Sweet Child O Mine - GnR (Bit of a cliched choice but I just love the way it builds and builds and has wanky fast bits but still stays focussed and melodic)

Paint A Vulgar Picture - Smiths

I Ain’t No Nice Guy (acoustic version) - Motorhead. The underrated Phil Campbell

One In A Million - GnR. Dodgy lyric, great acoustic solo

Oh shit, forgot the two good Metallica ones:

Nothing Else Matters
Master of Puppets (the slow melodic solo)

Both played not by Kirk but by the superior James Hetfield

The Guitar/Piano solo from My Baby is a Headfuck by the Wildhearts is awesome.

It was the final ever recording made by the late Mick Ronson (Ex Spiders from Mars) before he died of liver cancer in 1993. It’s just brilliant - it distills everything I love about Rock music into about 30 seconds.

The kiss - The Cure. it’s the opening solo of this song. I think it sounds really good and it’s oppressive too. At least I feel it like this.

Was gonna say a couple of tracks of Slayer’s Reign In Blood album but thinking of it that whole album in itself is one big freaking solo.

That’s “Mr Kerry King, Sir” to the likes of you and me, dude!

Actually, my fave Slayer solo is in Dead Skin Mask, but that’s off Seasons In The Abyss.

Jeff Hanneman’s solos are cack, though, don’tcha think?

Ooh ooh, haven’t mentioned Thin Lizzy’s Black Rose yet (or Roisin Dubh or whatever it is called, I don’t remember exactly) - the way they work all those Irish motifs into the extended solo - very clever!

The Solo’s I love are not always the most complicated:

Off the top of my head:

Nine Inch Nails - Ruiner (I love the distortion on the guitar)
Pantera - Floods
Guns n Roses - Double Talkin Jive or Estranged (cant decide)
Wildhearts - Sky Babies

There are many more that I really like that I cant be bothered to write up right now :)…

I think they both are. From what ive heard its just pointless widdling that doesnt go with the song at all !!!
Completely un-melodic too.

Yeah I can see your point. King is a killer rhythm guitarist, but the solos are pretty pointless, widdle-fests…

I also love

Stone Temple Pilots - Trippin’ On A Hole In A Paper Heart… what a great Tele sound, absolutely superb

Radiohead - Just… although it’s not so much the solo, it’s the guitar work on the whole track that’s completely amazing.

The Wildhearts - My Baby Is A Headfuck… not as mind-blowing as the solos above, but so rock ‘n’ roll. I think Mick Ronson played this, didn’t he?

“Wrathchild” by Iron Maiden has a fantastic guitar solo.

Also, “I Wanna Be Your Dog” by the Stooges. If I remember correctly, it even got voted for “One of the best guitar tracks ever”.

The Solo from the end of The Hard Way from the new album is nearly as good
