oh mapex, yes. i considered getting one too, but i think it’s more a local brand, no? so it was hard to get here in austria.. then i decided for tama.

when i started playing i had a very very cheap set from a firm called “millenium”, that cost me about 250€… the crash cymbol lasted about one year. in the end i broke about a 1/10 big piece out of it, because of it’s bad quality, not to speak of the sound it made! :) then i added paiste cymbols which cost me about 120 €… 2 years later someone bought it off me for over €300!

and then, yeah… my new tama set for almost 700€. i think it’s also a swingstar but it sounds fantastic… i need to tune it, but that takes time, which i don’t have right now.

often heard about sabian cymbols. they seem to be pretty popular, but i never heard the sound of it. i think the slipknot guy does have them as well… but i don’t like slipknot :)

Your know what i love about Tama?? The toms are pretty good size!! what i hate about mapex? huge toms… well im talking about average series, not the tops!! My Drum was cool but i didn’t really like the deep sound of the toms, i prefer tama in this sence!!
Sabian are my favorite cymbals! i have tried Zildjian, Meinl, Pearl, paiste and some shitty cheap ones..
Sabian is amazing, i like the sounds, they are not as heavy as zildjian, it’s hard to explain it’s 100% a personal experience… i have never liked zildjian, i dunno why, for most of the people zildjian rocks, not for me!!
If u want to buy some sabian cymbals, you better start with b8 pro serie, not b8, because of the quality and of course the price.
Actually a lot of good drummers are using sabian, i don’t like slipknot too, but for sure there’re too many like Mike Portnoy from Dream Theather using sabian.
Cheers

i’ll keep that in mind! thanks!

i haven’t tried many cymobls. just that cheap millenium, paiste and now tama. i should try some in the music store. man, that reminds me when i played on my set for the first time. it was a music store called “musik-produktiv” in vienna. they had a pretty large room there with about 30 different drum sets and a lot of percussion stuff. the acoustic in that room was amazing. i felt like a rockstar there. first i don’t wanted to play, because everything was pretty quiet there, because of the large room. it was a pretty nice atmosphere. and then, when i got on stage it was pretty loud. at the beginning i did not really play just hitting the snare a few times, and toms and everything… but then i could help it. i had to play a nice little groove… that really was an amazing feeling!
my brother and father were with me and they had to laugh because i smiled during the whole play. :)

He uses Paiste.

I was talking to a drummer in a music shop yesterday (he works there) and he told me that Sabian were terrible!
He told me Zildjian were way better, but I’m not so sure.

Nah, its just personal taste. I’m all Zildjian but I wouldn’t say everyone should use them or that any other makes were crap.

Of Course it’s a personal experience, and of course it’s all about money, sabian sounds pretty good for me and it’s not as expensive as the other ones, comparing average series.
I have never said nothing about shitty cymbals or something, just telling my preference and experience.

For sure that musician guy who said zildjian is better uses a top Zildjian serie, not the cheap ones, that’s what im talking about. Quality V/S budget.

I would love to buy a gibson les paul custom, but imagine your budget is 400 bucks?? There’s no option, a cheap jackson, fender squier, yamaha, etc…

No no man, not you. I just meant whichever guy was telling Colin that Sabian arn’t the way was well out - Colin shouldn’t listen to people like who say that things are so clear cut, we know they never are. Its more a case of advice and then him going trying some and seeing what he likes within his budget and go with that - I didn’t mean you guys on here were slagging any brand/make/producer of cymbal, sorry if thats what you thought I was saying. I was meaning we WoMbles were right and not to believe the other guy just because he works in a music shop.

Moneywise - I used a large part of my student loan on my kit rather than books and now I get an endorsee rate on Zildjians so its that bit easier for me.

Wow, repeated myself alot there! Oh well!

Sabian B8 I think. I need a decent cymbal pack really cheap. And when I say really cheap, I mean really!

I could buy Sabian Solar cymbal pack with a ride stand for £69. Not a bad price for hi-hats, crash/ride and a ride cymbal.
But from what I’ve been told, they are the lowest of the low on Sabian’s end, but at that price, I’m not too suprised.

Colin, you should really think about the b8 pro pack, maybe the difference between the b8 and b8 pro it’s not too big, i have played with b8 pro and i really like the sounds.

Woah, my choice is now a lot tougher! :p

Planet Z cymbals, bear in mind I am a beginner, for £70 (I get a bit of a discount cause I know the dude).
You get hi-hats, a crash and a ride.

They also sound really, really good!

Anybody know Marcus’ Music, Belfast website?

I have a Premier Signia in cherrywood finish.

I’ve had it for nearly 10 years now and it’s a fantastic drumkit.

I play in a metal band based in Preston,UK called Freakjesus http://www.freakjesus.co.uk (there is a link to our myspace site on there, there are a couple of mp3’s on there to check out)

My kit is a 5 piece…22” bass drum,12” mounted rack tom,14” and 16” floating floor toms,14” brass snare.
DW5000 series double kick pedal,2 x 18” Zildjian Z Crash,22” mega bell Zidjian Z ride,20” Zildjian Z China,8 and 10” Zildjian K splashes and 13” and 14” Zildjian Z hi-hats (one mounted on a X-hat on the right hand side of the kit).

I started off with a basic kit which just had a bass drum, snare and one mounted tom and 2 cymbals and a hi-hat.
I think it’s better not to go the whole hog until you get a basic grasp of being able to play,it may be best hiring one for a while,or go check out a local rehearsal room, some actually have drumkits avaiable to use and you can just pay for an hour or so and give it a bash before you decide that it’s for you or not.

It can be abit daunting going into a musical instrument shop and having a bash while everyone is milling about.
