Just wondering if any of you play / sing in a band?

If so: what is your role in the band (guitar, vocals etc.), name of the band, what kind of style do you play? Covers or own songs? Are you succesful? What do you think of playing live? Does the band have a website and/or any soundclips / mp3’s online? I want to know everything :)

Me - I just started a band but we don’t have a name yet. I play bassguitar. We play alternative rock with female vocals. Only play covers (‘cause we’ve just started) by artists like Skunk Anansie, Tracy Bonham, Alanis Morissette, Heather Nova etc. But we plan to write our own songs in the near future, of course. Haven’t played live yet, but I’ve played live once (only one song) with some other people and it was cool! No website or soundclips online yet :) I still want to do a Therapy? cover someday ;)

i used to be in bands when i was about 13 or 14, but it was more a hobby than a profession. don’t have any contact left to my ex-bandmates, the last thing i heard was that our guitarist was killed by her ex-boyfriend. sad but true.

I play bass, but not in a band really. I mostly transcribe tabs. And play a tune when I feel like it.

I didn’t even know you were in my band! I didn’t play bass, what didn’t you play? We really sucked.

My sister, on the other hand, is the most kick ass drummer in the world and you can listen to her band at

I know technically this is a WoM bands thread but she’s here in spirit, she just doesn’t have computer access (hence her fantastic site was made by meeeeeeeeeeeeeee :D)

I used to be in a band. We never had a complete line-up so we never really got serious about it. It was mostly just for fun. Plus i’m too bored to sit down and practise how to properly play drums. I only play when i’m in the mood to do so. But i think we had a good potential. The guitarist was very good, he came up with great ideas for songs, much better than songs that get released anyway.
We also used to play this alternative-rock stuff. Kinda like a mixture of Radiohead, Placebo and Sonic Youth. I think we had some songs on-line but i can’t remember the URL right now. If you’re interested to hear some songs of ours i can search a bit and tell you where to find and download them.

i had one too, ‘twas called december never ends to honour the mighty catherine wheel; we sounded a bit like swervedriver and ride. i was very serious about it, my best friend used to write the lyrics whilst i was the one doing the music. we had about 9/10 songs plus few covers. i used to play the guitar at that time cuz my friend said she wanted the bass (an instrument i’d always rated as boring until got to know about some guy called jeff ament and another one we all know..). and wanted to sing too. fine. we had a guy playing the guitar but never found a drummer. we used to borrow a drum machine to reharse and other bands’drummers when we played live (very small club where people were doing everything but listening to us..). later there had been a fight between me mate and the guitarist cos he thought he could sing a couple of songs but she didn’t want him to. she sacked him. we didn’t look for another guitarist and went acoustic for a little while, which was fun. then she stopped playing the bass, she wasnt very good at it, was taking classes but gave up. right, i had dropped art school to write songs full time when she came up to me saying she felt so depressed blah blah blah, she didnt wanna do anything anymore. when i moved to london, a guy taught me how to play the bass and the drums but i had already decided the career in music wasnt for me…aw

i was in an awful punk band when i was 16. i should have played 2nd guitar and write the lyrics, but because it took me over a year to buy one (30€ on the fleamarket, the repair was much more expensive and it still sounded shite) i just sticked with writting. also there aren’t any recordings, those lyrics i wrote those days really make me laugh (or cry) today.
i’m still writting, also i don’t have band at the moment.

I’m a singer in a band called ANTISILENCE. We’re playing together since 1992. We have 2 albums. Fist one (New World Order Sucks) was released in 1995 the second one (Suffer Hits) was released in 2000. As we are a lazy band, we’re now working on our new album. We started as a death metal band. But now we have influences of hardcore punk in our music.
We have our own albums, so we play our own songs. But, we sometimes play cover songs in our shows. (Last Caress by the Misfits, Screamager by T?, Breaking the Law by Judas Priest..). We opened for some famous bands in Turkey (Stratovarius, Rumble Militia, Overkill, Anathema, Destruction)
We don’t have an online website at this moment.

..and if I remember correctly, there’s an mp3 of your band playing ‘Opal Mantra’ on http://www.suicidepact.com!

As for me, I had a band when I was about 18. We played live and did a demo. That was it.

I’m currently playing drums with a guitarist friend who’s big into Queens of the Stone Age, so we’re playing loads of Therapy? & QOTSA covers - just for fun at the moment. We’re thinking of getting a bassist and playing live after Christmas.

What a great opportunity to plug our crap band!
We have a cover band called REIKÄ (those of you not fluent in the fine art of speaking finnish, ‘reikä’ is literal translation of HOLE).
We do hole songs in finnish - no mps, I’m afraid.
And yes, we are completely shite. We haven’t yet managed to even have one full rehearsal, which tells quite a lot of the level of commitment we all have towards this project ;)
I’m ‘Courtney’ (haven’t thought of a finnish translations for the names yet- if you know finnish, feel free to suggest), although I can’t play. That never stopped me before.
Other than that, I’ve been involved in several bands, doing most anything from singing to playing bass (which i’m really really bad at). Singing is what I do best and really what I should stick to.
Lately I’ve been toying with the idea of learning to play drums…

ha! i was in the same thing in highschool, for about 2 days… our non-band was called PIV (Pimps In Volvos)… i was suppose to write the songs and sing… and then i had about 4 friends that were going to learn how to play, but never did… we had 2 songs… one was about our highschool, and the other was a song called Pookaroo, which was the only word as well…

so of course nothing ever really came of it, but somehow one of the “band members” designed our album cover… it was a Volvo jumping over something which i can’t remember, but it was really funny…

my god that was a sad story… i’m going to hang my head in shame now…

I didn’t play rhythm guitar, started learning but never got anywhere. Started learning again and have gotten a lot further (I can play bits of songs now and I have a song for telling Tales)

I was in a lush band. Our practices consisted of bitching and eating. We never agreed on songs to play so we never actually played any. I was too scared to speak to the drummer and we had major arguments over who was gonna sing lead…we didn’t gel that well musically. We were like so good on our own singing away, and then we’d play together and sound like a cat brawl. I played guitar and sometimes piano and i sang the harmonys…I’m going solo dammit

The greatest band i was ever in… we had 2 mini albums, wrote all our own stuff, played great gigs, then unfortunatly Swiney (our drummer) broke his arm and we havnt got back together since. It a shame really. We used nearly always start a gig with “Big Cave In” or else “On The Turn” by Kerbdog, which goes down a treat! gets everyone in the mood and ready to break things! WHAT A LAUGH!!

The few times my band played live, we started each gig with ‘JJ’s Song’ by Kerbdog. This was around 97/98, so we were doing our little bit to promote them :-)

We also covered ‘Punishment Kiss’, but they were our only 2 covers. We had about 5 original songs which we demo’d.

I was lead singer for a band called Dead to the World for a month or so, until the other members rather unkindly pointed out that i couldn’t actually sing. It was a very depressing moment, because i’d always thought i was a damn good singer, but they played back a tape of me massacring ‘Closing Time’ by Semisonic (of all people…) and i had to admit it was pretty band. But my sister’s the drummer for a band called ‘10 Rock 20 GoTo 10’ (programming joke, apparently… bloody nerds), and they’re pretty good.
